How would it cost money to bring the blades within a CH of the housing? I see some that are 1/8" away. Ridiculous and inexcusable.

tighter the tolerance, stronger the shearing force between the tip of the fan blade and housing i would imagine. shearing force can cause fan blade deformation

also noise factor. stronger shearing force causes a higher pitch noise which is more noticeable. with loose tolerance, the turbulence between the end of the blade and the housing act sorta like a bearing.

hehe to be honest, when you 1st asked this question, i thought you were talking about the impeller design that the gentle typhoon use on their 3000RPM+ fans.

seems like that's another whole ball of wax to figure out since it does very little for wind shear force/noise biggrin.gif

According to Nidec, that ring helps guide the output air column to be more focused. I also suspect that since the highspeed GT's are designed to go up to 5400 rpm, the ring assists in holding the blade shape against high centrifugal force.

yah that's why i thought the ring was there to provide structural integrity to the blades themselves. at 3000+RPM, the blades can be deformed to a degree that will not only cause airflow problems but cause rubbing with the frame itself. tho i wasn't thinking towards centrifugal force as much as i was thinking about the static pressure generated and its interaction with the blades themselves. but i suppose centrifugal force also compound the problem given how long they design the blades to be.
