[Forbes] Valve Co-founder Gabe Newell Says EA's Origin Service Is 'Still Playing Catch-Up' - Page 3

I find it funny how people nitpick over such nonsense like Steam vs Origin. They do what they are intended to do quite well, thats about as far as my crits go for either. I personally dislike how everything has to be monopolised and would prefer to go back to simply having my own chat client and a desktop folder called "Games" which is basically what I do now. All these clients do is offer whats already available to a gamer, but in a single encased and controlled environment. Sounds like... Apple. Yet a lot of user I see on here praising Steam like its a Jesus of software are foam-at-the-mouth angry at Apple for doing the same kinds of things. Oh well, it makes for a funny read.

Also, the employee handbook. I don't know what to say... Whoever takes this seriously needs their head checked. But it does seem to be one of their best pieces of of advertisement I've seen in a while. Sounds very... dare I say... Apple-ish. And hey, wasn't a top Apple exec seen going into and coming out of, a Valve/Steam building? But they deny it. Said top exec simply walked in to check out the decor and walked out without meeting any1... sure...

The fact that everyone belives every single word out of Newells mouth makes me laugh... Apple is not the only company with a "reality distortion field" if you ask me... And it seems like a lot of people here LOVE the kool-aid...

Edit> I also notice that Valve takes too long to release a game, and EA pushed them out too fast. Perhaps meeting in the middle would be nice.

But, as much as this pains me to say, but because of how long we've been waiting for HL3, if its not in the top 3 games I've ever played I will be disappointed. The hype, the wait, its been too much. It's simply epic or fail at this point to me. EA pumps out a lot of trash, but I can play bad games. I can't play games that don't get released...

Valve: Stop talking about yourselves and do something.

EA: Quality > Quantity.

The original Steam had very limited functionality. No overlay, web browser, etc. Steam was just a program to download games, which it still is.

Basically what EA did with rebranding EA Downloader to Origin is if Valve rebranded Steam to Crowbar.

I think Steam is great, i don't mind Origin either, but in the end of the day, i just want to click on the game, and it opens the game, not open a program that then will open the game...

Origin is nice...when it works. When it doesn't work, that's 60 bucks down the drain for my younger brother. EA doesn't give a rat's bum about it either. So no more of our money is going to that crappy service.

I repped him for that post.

You unfortunately have shown yourself as much worse an "attacker" of "defender" than you attempt to make me out to be, especially when much of your recent replies to me amounts to "lol ur an EA fanboy".

I've never been a Valve hater or an EA fanboy. I've posted here that I have no problem with Steam on many occasions (which funny enough was before the lack of subjectivity from the Valve herd became cringeworthy) and I've done a LOT of my own criticisms on EAs forums (aka where it would actually matter, not just whining on a random forum about the whole of EA in general).

The companies themselves actually have very little to do with it.

It's actually the way people run around like a herd of sheep incapable of forming their own subjective opinions that I disagree with and it just so happens that a lot of it seems to happen with EA or Valve are involved.

What actually kicked it all off in truth, was how a moderator on this forum somehow convinced basically everyone here that EA had somehow managed to get a game published by THQ (that was aqcuired by "questionable" means) to be removed from his Steam account and everyone joined him in raging.

He was posting it all over about EA had done this and not ONE PERSON stopped to use their brain for a sec and say:

"hey, what the heck does EA have to do with it? It's a Steamworks game published by THQ. How can EA have been involved?"

Except of course for myself. Funny enough, after I exposed the truth, almost all evidence of the discussion was removed and I was given a warning for "public scrutiny"....what made it worse is that the mod happened to be leading the anti Origin charge at the time.

That's when I truly found out the mentality of certain areas of the forum (and the internet) and why I have taken a distaste to the way people just run around following anything anyone says to them as gospel as long as it fits in with their own personal agenda (or even agendas that aren't even their own), not even stopping to think for themselves to see something so simple.

It was also easily seen with the "Dark Souls is locked to 720p!!!!" outrage, when simple research shows that games that use GFWL architecture are REQUIRED to support a certain number of other resolutions. Taking the time to do the research and come up with your own conclusion was all it took to find this info. I'll let you guess how many people who raged did any research. I'll give you a hint. It's between zero and negative nine thousand.

Instead, people took a badly translated Japanese interview as truth and raged on it because raging against Dark Souls is what everyone just happened to be doing at the time.

It just proves my point about the herd mentality and general lack of subjective thinking.

People will follow the herd and jump all over X guy for being misleading because it's what "everyone else" says, but Y guy can tell those same people that yellow skittles cause skin cancer and people will revolt against yellow skittles without a second thought.

Did you call them? If you have the relevant info there's no reason for them to not help you.

Like Origin, Valve has its share of problems: bad/no service for some, taking a long time to release games, etc. But, IMO, that's where the comparison ends. The corporate attitude toward their customers is better, they put a LOT of effort into bug fixes and new content for their games (most of which you never have to pay for e.g. TF2, CS:S). But to me, the biggest proof of Valve's value is sheer playability in their games. L4D and L4D2 don't impress me, but I've enjoyed years playing TF2 and CS:S all well-supported and a heck of a lot of fun. Only now am I tired of TF2 and CS:S. Valve also don't play pay-for-DLC nonsense games with their customers.

I agree with this post also. Both companies have to find a a good development balance.
EA is supporting PC gaming with releasing a good amount of games, on time in many cases, but their main focus is money and quality suffers.
Whereas Valve takes their time, thinking about customer satisfaction but to a fault. Valve tries to satisfy all and EA tries to satisfy very few.

EA's ability to release games with Valve's attention to detail would be amazing.
I like Valve, but there's very few new games to play from them. People will continue to name 2-5 year old games, but I've shelved those games months after their release.

I don't really mind Origin. The interface is pretty simple and it just works, which is fine. I don't know about that supposed spyware rumor that came up a few months back but I have no qualms to claim. That said, GabeN is right in saying that it needs improvement. Honestly, GFWL is the only DDS that I have a problem with, and that's because of constant login problems with games like DR2 and GTAIV, not to mention it's corrupted my save files on more than one occasion...
