[Forbes] Valve Co-founder Gabe Newell Says EA's Origin Service Is 'Still Playing Catch-Up' - Page 5

I just don't understand people sometimes.

Also, why don't people just marry Steam already. Or stop playing EA games and keep us from hearing the most pointless whining ever.

Of course when Valve makes their games Steam only, its ok. They are still the ultimate saviors of PC gaming, the almighty Gaben shall lead his children to victory and claim world dominance.

But when EA does it, they are the devil. They are evil, and Gabe Newell shall strike them down.

Even though the services are pretty much the same, with Origin playing catchup.

The hypocrisy astounds me.

He never mentioned Steam, did he? Steam could be the epitome of DRM in his eyes or it could be nearly as bad in his eyes...And it's a forum. A forum is where people discuss their opinions. If you don't want to read it, just stop reading his post and scroll down.

Steam shouldn't be forced on anyone, neither should Origin, GFWL or Impulse (I have to use all 4, which is an extra 4 passwords to remember when I reformat. Impulse is really bad with it too, if I get that password wrong 2-3 times I have to wait in the applications words "a few hours" to try again)

All of them have their problems, that's for sure. I like games that may come bundled with Steam/whatever but don't actually require you to run it except for patch updates, Skyrim and Sins of a Solar Empire are proof of it. My SoaSE is Impulse but I only ever launch Impulse for patching. Same with Skyrim.

Yeah because EA Download Manager totally had a store back then, right? Right? rolleyes.gif

But who cares about facts?

Did Windows 95 have half the features of Windows 7? No. But there would almost definitely still be traces of code from W95 in W7 as they're doing a similar job and why rewrite code if it works fine?

You purchased the games on their website, and used EA download manager to download the games.

And Origin and Steam just added a web browser to their features list to let you purchase in client, pretty much.

How does this all prove that Origin is not based off EA Downloader? Both download games/updates, etc. EA could merely update EA Downloader to add some Steam like features, rename it and have a new program. The fact it has more features means nothing. The logic doesn't work.

However, I think EA are just going to do what Valve do and make their games exclusive to their own client.

I think that is better, that way people can choose. Only EA tittles I would be getting would be BF series, any others don't catch my interest.

The only good things about Steam are the social and cloud aspects of it. Everyone still hated it up until Origin came along.
If anything, Origin is making Steam look better than it ever did. Gabe is probably Origin's biggest fan right about now.

I dont think many people realise this.

Gabe has made more comments in the press since the launch of Origin than I can remember for a long time.

All of a sudden its "Gabe says this" and "Gabe says that" in the news.

Same with all the "Steam or no buy" talk. Since Origins launch/the removal of Crysis 2 etc etc etc, all of a sudden, every game in the universe must use Steam or apparently noone will buy it.

He's taking this time to stand as the knight in shining armor amongst all the evil doers which is helping many forget that he was once the evil doer to many till just a few years ago or less.

He's been specifically making statements in the press to improve his image in light of other companies with DRM systems having problems.

He's not a stupid guy.

I don't know anyone who hated steam up until Origin came out to be honest. Everyone I know loves it in fact even before Origin came out.

Most of the Steam client hate was when it was first released, and about a year or two after when it was still buggy for certain users. After about a year there was just a minority who disliked Steam.

So much of this. I can't seem to understand how Steam/Valve can do no wrong. They could track you down and steal your first born son and force you into a 20 year contract to get him back, and people would cheer that they are giving the kid back, and not mention they kidnapped him in the first place, or blackmailed the parent.

Everything is about control these days. Companies want to control everything you do, and Steam/Valve is no exception.

You don't understand because you know nothing about steam or valve or the games they make or how they feel about their customers hence the reason for the URL.
