I'm still going to try to bang it out with my 2500k till Haswell. But it's nice to see Intel keeping the clock crown thumb.gif

OC results with Hyper212, D14 and H100 wouldn't hurt either :S

In essence, it is the new bang for the buck cpu

PCI-e 3.0 has double the bandwidth of its predecessor: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_Express#PCI_Express_3.0

Cards just cannot saturate it yet, as it was with pci-e 2.0 before it.

Oh, I thought 7970 or 680 couldn't exhaust PCI-e 2.0 bandwidth. Could you please link to these benchmarks which compare the cards at different PCI speeds? I'm definitely interested.

If it can run a stable 5.0 24/7 underwater this thing will be worth it. This is the deal breaker for me.

The frequency delta isn't huge. You'll still be able to hit 4.4 - 4.6GHz without resorting to exotic cooling, but success in the 4.8 - 5.0GHz range will be limited to water alone for most. Ivy Bridge is also far more sensitive to voltage than Sandy Bridge. Heat dissipation can increase significantly as a function of voltage, so you'll want to stay below 1.3V in your overclocking attempts.

Source: Anandtech Review

I think the 3770k is great for system builders, but not great enough for current owners of SB or SB-E or overclockers. I'll wait until IB-E or Haswell before upgrading my sig rig.

Edit: Give this a read too. Undervolting and Overclocking Ivy Bridge

biggrin.gifbiggrin.gifbiggrin.gifbiggrin.gif Nom nom nom *eating my words*

No need to, yet.

On the same cooling method it doesn't. On LN2 SB would obviously overclock much higher but it doesn't thanks to the limited OC Intel imposed. on water and air, it clocks higher than Ivy.
A flop? Not really, but still not a worthy improvement.
It's not worth the upgrade? From Sandy, definitely not. From Nehalem, it is.

I am 50/50 on what I said earlier. IPC has improved well beyond 7% it seems, clock for clock. Since the 2600K can't match that performance even at the same clocks. I remember the 2600K still being considerably behind the 3960K in benches...

However... the biggest downside to this ordeal happens to be with the temperatures... Topping at 90*C @ 4.9GHz is just too much of a downside for most overclockers on OCN. Why buy the new CPU if you're going to get the same performance with this chip @ 4.5GHz back when your old chip ran cooler @ 5GHz?

I mean, think about it. The 2600K was said to top out at around 70-75*C @ 5GHz with a substantial number of volts backing that. (70*C is unsafe for most desktop CPUs anyhow, for 24/7 runs at least.) This tops at 90*C @ the same clock speed... with lower volts... >.>

I would still get one of these though. Coming from an AMD fanboy: THIS IS NOT A BULLDOZER!!! Intel still made improvements, that were clearly visible, and will be tweaked in future updates.
