[Various]Intel Ivy Bridge Reviews - Page 6

Actually Ivy Bridge is pretty good. There isn't much of an improvement on the CPU side, but the power consumption is very low compared to Sandy Bridge chips. Hats off, Intel! thumb.gif

The iGPU improved over 50%, which is quite impressive in just one generation.
Unfortunately none of these chips are in available in stores yet. I need the i7-3770K so bad, because I have to review it.

Will we see those chips in store as of April 29th? 29th is a Sunday, so what?
I'm confused.

I'm definately buying one to replace my 2600k purely for the 30% improvement in Quick Sync performance. I wont need to OC above 4.5ghz anyway as QS does most of the work. My Silver Arrow should be good enough.

Does QuickSync actually output decent video? I haven't used it in a few months, but even short videos (that were originally in the ~10 MB/s range, 1080p) would turn out with some sort of "artifacting". Never had it where every frame was flawless.

Yeah unfortunately with my experience so far it suffers from the same problems as CUDA with blockiness and artifacting, but only when used for Encoding. I have it set as my Decoder, with software as my encoder so I don't get the quality issues but still get that wicked speed bump from the QS tech.

But reading that Anandtech review, they mention more quality settings and options with v2.0 so maybe it has been fixed?

Some posts i'm reading on here are quite 'Apple-esque', the fact of the matter is; IB is no where near the improvement people ( myself included ) were looking for. People comparing it to Bulldozer is not right, but it's not a million miles away. Yes, the temps are down, brilliant. Yes the intergrated gpu is better, brilliant - not so if you use a dedicated GPU which, lets be honest, most desktop users do. But in terms of CPU /core performance, it is no big great step up, if at all, from SB. The only great upside to IB, at the moment, is the power consumption, and that is important, but as an AMD guy looking to do the switch, i'm not getting even half - tempted by this release. Sorry for the rant, i just hate to see some people think it is as great an improvement as they are making it out to be.thumb.gif

Temps for the 4.5-4.7 ghz range are perfectly within normal. The majority of Sandy Bridge chips don't go over that level anyway. As I said reports of massive temperature increases seem to be wrong. My chip hits 75 over a 12 hour prime run at the exact same level their chip does. Doesn't seem to me to be the huge problem everyone was so convinced it would be.

It's nothing but an improvement no matter which way you look at it. Whether or not it's a large enough improvement for you to buy it doesn't take away from that fact. Ivy is home to the fastest x86 CPU cores you can buy.
