[D] Newell opens up on 'Half-Life 3' dev issues - Page 7

I played the original Ricochet a few years ago with a couple friends, and it was the most fun I had in ages. Now I know the whole Ricochet 2 thing is code for HL3, but if Ricochet 2 actually comes to fruition (even if it's a source remake) I'd be happy as can be. Such an awesome game that.

HL3 will be released when it's done. End of story tongue.gif

Same here. Whenever I see people get excited over HL3, I feel bad for them. They want it so badly, but it's nowhere near release (if it ever does release).

Are they waiting for a all new engine to blow everything alway like HL2? Are they too busy with Steam? At least we all know SC2 was going to come out, D3 and also Warcraft IV. To me i think Valve has lost it with games and only managing the Online Store. Games like Dota 2, CS:GO are nothing but updated versions of the older games.

If anyone thinks HL3 is too big to fail... guess again. Sports taught me that lesson a long time ago.

This is my biggest worry. Even if its better than most, but not really epic, it will feel like a let down. The hype is just so high, perhaps they want it to dye down a bit? But I don't think that will happen. Plus, they've talked about it and left hints all the time, its like they are teasing us for fun. I'd rather they just not talk about it.

As far as the new engine... I thought Source was built in such a way that it could simply be upgraded and added to over and over again, not requiring a full redesign at all. But I guess there is a limit to everything, but I thought I remembered reading an article where they said it was designed in a way where they don't need to remake it from scratch at all, but I'm likely getting thoughts mixed up.

Overhype is a pretty dangerous thing for any product.

Once people are whipped up into a frenzy, they become irrational and unrealistic in their expectations and the only direction their level of satisfaction can go is downwards.

The longer the mantra "don't worry, they are taking their time and when it releases, it will be awesome" goes on, the more pressure they are under to live up to those expectations.

Even to the point where even hinting at whether the game is in production or not is a delicate subject.

a) Valve is a flat structure. This means that nobody is telling nobody what to do and, instead, everybody is running around the building with their desk plugging and unplugging as they start or end their part in any of the departments.
b) Valve has nobody above them telling to hurry up. Half Life 1 was delayed for a whole year while they were redesigning the game. Now, after a few iterations, its not stupid to say that Half Life 3 is the most anticipated game in the whole computer gaming era and, specially with their business model, everybody in the company will make sure that their "baby" is either perfect or non-existent at all. Put yourself on the devs shoes....Half Life is not some sort of game that you can screw up, no, its THE game. Its an icon from the first game to the last one, and its very hard not to give credit to Valve for creating the series which have been the once of utmost importance in the last decade (for pc gaming).
c) The devs there are as interested in the game as we are. So, do you imagine yourself trying to create such a master piece...and not having a schedule to follow? You would iterate it once, and again, and again, and again until you reached perfection. But, you know: perfection is unreachable.
What I'm trying to say is that Valve time has only one finish line: "perfect". There is no other, as no other company ever released their products with such love and pride, to a point that you KNOW that a Valve game is a must from day #1 because they've been proven right once and again and again.
So, HL3 will be ready when it is. And I believe we should all be happy for it, because it means that this game means so much for the devs as it means for the people that will buy it, and I'd rather have no new half life rather than having a bad one at all (hello, Duke Nukem every one? That was insulting). HL1 was impressive, HL2 was also mindblowing...and then end of EP2 was damn epic. So, for the next Half Life I expect the same sensations the first games left me.
Yeah, this means we could never have HL3 altogether...but we should have faith nonetheless. I just don't think in HL3 anymore. The day its released or its confirmed (its obvious they've been working on it) it will come back to my mind, but IMO there is no point to blame Valve for not releasing a game they wouldn't be happy to release wink.gif
PS: we should be happy to have Valve setting the pc standards that high, and if more companies joined Valve professionalism pc gaming would be in a much better shape that it is.

I think I'm going to throw up.

Anyone ever think that Valve is just a big pimp whoring out everyone else's work. So o.k. they have 1 or 2 half decent games. For the most part they simply make money by providing DRM do they not. My guess is that they have a minimal staff working on this title, if anyone at all, as they are already making tonnes of cash by sitting back and doing nothing.... Gabe looks like the sort of guy whose more interested in where the next cheeseburger is coming from.

There is almost no way any game could survive the amount of hype this one game has surrounding it and hype is a proven killer of any type of product of any kind.
Riccochet 2 is doomed mad.gif

Except that the Half-Life franchise and pretty much ALL first party Valve titles have been great, well polished games. So unless Valve somehow deviates from their standard quality I think we'll be seeing a great game, whenever it is launched. In fact I am kind of excited by the amount of time it is taking, it sounds like the team has had some great ideas they are working on.
