Maybe, maybe not.

True.

True.

Really, what is AMD doing? Waiting for the GTX 690 and seeing how much they have to overclock their 7990 to match it and then slap a hair blower on it to prevent it from frying?

But what if the 670 sells for $250. Kickass mid-range card that's way more affordable to the general public.. could warrant a huge promotion tongue.gif

Plus, the 670's would probably just be all of the failed 680's

Me thinks too early tongue.gif That would just kill their 680 sales which is already beating the 7970. If AMD doesn't have a faster product, and they can't keep the cheaper to manufacture 680 from selling out, you can bet they'll milk it for all they can biggrin.gif

I got pretty decent 680s, so, maybe skip this and just wait till the 780?

2 680s will outperform a 690, that much I'm certain of. 2 cards always outperform the dual-GPU cards when you're using the highest-end available

So now everyone has taken the bait more than once since January. Both Amd and Nvidia has a caused a feeding frenzy, and Intel is launching Ivy Bridge.
I am personally am backing off for a few months till all the dust settles between the players ie Nvidia,AMD and Intel with all their new formats. I have 2 pair of 7970s and 680s on ROG Z68 platforms.
I would only buy a new dual card to avoid any microstuttering issues.thumb.gif

I'm taking the same stance. Pretty much no spending until GK110 comes out

Historically this has always been true of any dual GPU vs two single.

However this is also unlike no other GPU's before it. The tech, power consumption, & heat is not the same as before historically either. We may see the 690 perform on a very similar or closer to level than ever before.

Even if it doesn't - the performance from a dual GPU, usually at the price of 1 1/2 single GPU's (estimating), is worth the performance in a single PCIe slot.

I think we've yet to determine what it will yield and can't really determine outcome until it's tested, other than guess theoretically.

My 6990 has 8x 8x, it uses a lot more power than 2x gtx 680's. A gtx 690, has 8x 6x pcie pins, one fan, one board.

I honestly think that it will have slightly less overclocking headroom than two stand alone reference gtx 680's - however- this is nividia's 'inception' of being so efficient in quite literally forever - and it will allow them to go full steam ahead in providing two normally clocked 680's. I see them capitalizing on their own hardware opportunity.

I can't be certain. But I believe there is a damn fine chance of it happening.

That said - we still don't even KNOW if it's a gtx 690 yet.

What very many people fail to realize is a GTX 690 with a water block is literally EXACTLY the same as as 2 GTX 680 in sli with water blocks. Virtually all of the GTX 680's on the market right now are voltage locked to 1.175V. The EVGA hydrocoppers tops out at like ~60 degrees on water and is hindered by being voltage locked.

A GTX 690 on water will not experience heat issues but will still run into the inherent voltage cap at 1.175v. Thus, a 690 on water will perform exactly the same as two 680's on water.
