Do you experience any micrsotuttering with SLI 680's? - Page 2

All multi GPU setups CAN have microstutter, but it is far from guaranteed. As brettjv mentioned, it is strongly tied to the load on the GPUs. There are a number of things that can prevent GPUs from running near 100% load such as CPU limitations, poor scaling, and artificially reducing the load with a frame limiter.

I'm not sure if that's actually true. Every single article I've ever read on microstutter states that every setup experience some form of it. More powerful setups had less microstutter but it was still there in the frametimes.

Usually around 90% usage across GPUs my frametime variance is nearly identical to that of a single GPU. This is on crossfire BTW so SLI may be different.

Here is the thing. For 90% of the people as long as they are over 60fps they cant tell if they are using CF/SLI or Single GPU. The problem becomes noticeable once you go below 60fps. For example @ 40fps dual GPUs will stutter. You can easily tell how much smother a single GPU still is. One reason i tell people not to go SLI or CF to match a Single GPU is this. For example lets take GTX680. Its get 70fps @ A Game. Its ~ $500. You buy lets say 2 x HD 7850 ~ $500. (Nvidia Equivalent GTX560 Ti). The this is They will hit ~ 75-85 fps too and it may seem they are getting more fps then GTX680 but once more demanding games come out and GTX680 hit 45fps the CF/SLI Setup will hit ~ 50-55fps. In this case you will get stutter. Basically in short CF and SLI is only for very high end, Trying to achieve whats not possible with Single GPU and not the other way around. Right now the only card is would SLI/CF it would be HD 7950+ and GTX580 3GB+

I agree with everything you just said. The real problem is that NVIDIA and AMD are not very forthcoming about the issue, and review sites don't do enough to call them out on it.

^Agree with this, with the exception of using a 580 over the 680. I would personally only crossfire or SLI if I need more power, and there isn't a better, single gpu solution available.

I agree that once you hit your moniters refresh rate it's hard to notice microstutter but it's still there right? This is the first time I've heard anything to the contrary. I was under the impression you will always get some amount of microstutter.

The less fps you get the more you will notice the frame time. Dual GPUs have higher frame times and because in different games cards react differently and each frame is different it results in different frame time between the GPUs. This difference can be noticed if its big enough and called stutter. Even Single GPUs can stutter if driver and the game dont work too well with each other. For a good working example a Single GTX680 will hit a constant 5ms frame time. 2 x GTX680 will hit something like 10-15ms. Worst then single but as long as its over 60fps and stays constant you will not notice the stutter. Now even in cases you get 60fps+ if frame times are something like this (5ms, 15ms, 5ms, 30ms) You will notice the stutter. Right now Nvidia is much better with this buy providing smother frame times in SLI. This though only applies to cards like GTX580, Not sure if GTX680 has good frame times too but it should. In a way via drivers in SLI GTX580 is much mother then GTX570 SLI simply because its high end and Nvidia makes better SLI drivers for it. HD 6970 actually is better then GTX570 in this regard but worse then GTX580. HD 7970 and GTX680 i have no idea but from some reviews its clear GTX680 SLI is better at it.

The one time that I was having an issue with microstutter (not with these cards, thankfully), the higher I could keep the fps, the better. I would try and keep my fps above 80 at all times when I had it, and that seemed to help. Flip queue helped reduce it, but a little bit was always there--only so much that software can really do. I think the higher fps just helped not miss the monitor refreshes, so the higher fps was just simply masking the problem. I would agree with it still being there, though. Even if is just masked by those extra frames. That's my guess. headscratch.gif

I have generated graphs with Crysis, BF3, and some other games and the story is the same on all of them. As the GPU load begins to drop below 100% the variance in frame times also decreases. Somewhere around 90% load (this is just a rough number that I saw and is varies from game to game) the variance is essentially the same as a single GPU. Feel free to log frame times with FRAPS and see for yourself.
