Check here for a power consumption

Your link shows 624w under full load for what appears to be just the two cards, not the entire system. If you account for the fact his cpu will be using >95w (probably more like 130w due to the overclock) + the rest of the system components he is easily over 750w. Granted Furmark is a worst case scenario, but I would still bet that some games would spike the PSU enough to trigger it's shutdown mechanism.

I will have to talk to him about going this route, not sure how long I will be staying with him but I may be able to list the stuff from here if I have him take some pictures for me. I can actually log into my newegg account and find the exact parts that he ordered back a few years ago and put a thread in the appraisals section so I can get a better idea at how much I will have to play with in addition to the $500.

Haha, quite observant biggrin.gif, I just haven't really kept up with new technology since I built my rig about 2 years ago. I don't have the time to keep up like I did when I was in highschool with all of this college work, so that is why I put the question to the experts. My friend is actually a little bit weird about buying used components, but I may be able to convince him that he will get a much better deal (I've never had a problem with buying them, but I'm me and he is him).

Don't forget the efficiency, the PSU that was used is %86 efficient under typical load and %80 under full load.
Assuming an efficiency of %85, that 624W will turn out to be 530W so you still have ~200W for the rest of the system if you got a quality 750W unit.

I'm really going to stop arguing and concede it's possible, but not something I would personally do. Also I don't believe the numbers in that chart were taken at the wall, here is the blurb from the review-
Quote:
For this test we measure power consumption of only the graphics card, via PCI-Express power connector(s) and PCI-Express bus slot. A Keithley Integra 2700 with 6.5 digits is used for all measurements. Again, the values here reflect card only power consumption measured at DC VGA card inputs, not the whole system.

It appears they are using a multimeter directly on the PCI-E slot and power connector rather than a 'off-the-wall' unit, so doesn't the 624w represent the post AC-DC converted wattage?

I'm not sure really, Guru3D got 702W while HardOCP got 595W.

Even if you get GTX 480 or such high end cards, Q6600 is going to bottleneck. Not worth IMO.
I suggest you to upgrade CPU,GPU,RAM. and later add ssd or better HDD

i5 3570k 230$ ( when it's out, probably next week ) or i5 2500k
Z77 asrock Extreme 4 135$
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157293
GSKILL 8GB 1600MHZ 47$
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231428
GTX 570 250$
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130699
OR GTX 480 210$ ( Running hotter but performs slightly better and it's cheaper)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130759

I know it's over his budget, but there is no point upgrading GPU if CPU is going to bottleneck. Just so you know even Dual Core i3 is better than Q6600,
In some benchmarks i5 2500k beats over 100% http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/53?vs=288

I could be mistaken, but I believe the efficiency rating is the efficiency of converting the power draw from the wall into the labeled output, not the percentage of output you get from the PSU. For example, if you have a 750W PSU, and it's 80+ rated, it means it's going to draw a about 900W from the wall to get you that 750W under full load, not that you're only going to get 600W out of a 750W PSU. Unless we're talking about something completely different, in which case, ignore me.
