Comp sci isnt exactly only for Nasa.
Ontopic: I think I can list a few other programs they could have dropped instead of computer science.

The way the State is running, I wouldn't be suprised to see cuts hit FSU as well very soon. The last 5 years have taken its toll on people here in Florida.

They're shooting themselves in the foot. Computer sciences are where it's at, now, and for a long while to come.

Tulane did the same thing after Katrina. I went there Fall '08 as a Engineering Physics major, and after lengthy debates with my roommate (we were both insomniacs... made for interesting conversations) we both decided to swap to Comp Sci the following spring. We found out that it had been cut. He went with a Math major with a Digi Design minor, I transferred out ($50k a year for a tangentially connected degree for what I want to do? No thanks). The explanation we got from the dean was that the program was being held back by tenured professors and cutting the program was their best option. Thing is, they need to wait a decade to bring the department back otherwise the tenured professors have a right to their jobs back buttkick.gif

Lots of old protocols that public universities have to respect. Sometimes, the only way around the red tape is to tear down the walls holding it up.

Not saying it was a good choice, just that it might have been the best available.

People get mad when I.T jobs get outsourced to india.
Why though? we are doing it to ourselves, we get worse, indians get better.
Americans have dug their grave now lay in it and go worship your favorite tool head celebrity (which is all of them, got i hate the media and hollywood, no exceptions) and some dumb ass athlete (which again is all professional sports players, no exceptions)

But it so much fun, bro.... they would say. It is easier and cheaper to import Indians then hire locals. On a more serious note, Americans are not science people. They are businessman ans salesman and nothing else.

While indians are good at it dont get me wrong but.
America has ushered and created most of the technology the world uses today which can be seen in cars, computers, tv, the internet, cameras, etc these are all american inventions.....but that was done by Americans from the 1900s-1960's, lately we completely suck ass now.
We dont deserve to be called Americans we've ruined the prestige and the great name.

And look at where all this emphasis on being "business men" has gotten us. As FX alluded to, the foundation of good business is innovation. If you can offer a new technology or provide a service in a new way you should be successful. Unfortunately, innovation is not what is taught any longer, profit mongering for profits sake is what is valued and taught.

OT: The whole thing is very misleading as they are really only consolidating the departments. Not really a big deal
