Which Free Sprint Phone?

Thread Starter
Am looking at upgrading my phone with sprint and cannot decide on which phone to get. I won't spend money on a phone that will be outdated in 2 years anyways so it has to be a free phone. I've been using a Rumor 2 'non touch' phone for the last two years and cannot stand it. I had an HTC Touch prior to that with WM6.5 and I really liked the desktop like features it had. I am leaning towards the HTC Arrive, but have been interested in android phones as well like the Nexus S or LG Marquee or Samsung Conquer 4g. I will probably go thru radio shack, best buy or the sprint store. Any feedback will be appreciated, may not check back til morning though to see if get any responses. Thanks!

edit: Also 4g is not a requirement considering in the last two years I was never able to find 4g reception on my 4g broadband card. Also am hoping to do a lot of gaming on the phone so was looking at the 480x800 resolution phones with good graphics. The adreno 205 seems to be the most common graphics on the free phones but is hard to tell sometimes which phones have which cpu and gpus.

I actually have the HTC Arrive and love the whole WP7 experience on it. I'm a bit of a stickler for physical keyboards so it was already a strong choice, the screen is really nice, the sound quality is what really sold me though. I haven't heard better sound from a cellphone compared to a WP7 phone especially since I came from a iPod Touch to a ZuneHD to the Arrive and the ease of using the Zune software to sync and use the market place is great. The built in HD FM radio is nice too for runs or if I'm just out running errands.

Am leaning towards the Arrive myself.

Well I ended up getting an HTC Evo shift 4g for $20, I managed to root the phone but tried overclocking with setcpu but it won't let me go past the stock 800mhz. Does it have to have a custom rom to overclock?

EDIT: aANNNNNND this is what happens when you post without reading. Good choice, the Shift 4G is a solid device.

if you want games, WP7 is rather lacking at the moment.

I have a phone with the S2 chipset (Qualcomm 8xxx CPU + Adreno 205 GPU), and it runs most every game at playable framerates, even titles like Dead Space run fine.

That said, I would go with the Nexus S, beucase it is:

A) Nexus device, least carrier molested of any of your options

B) the SGX540 is a bit better than the 205.

avoid LG

nice choice. was one of the top phones back in 2010. what rom are you running? you may also want to find a kernel. i have the regular evo 4g and its running cyanogen 7..

the kernel needs to support overclocking.

gonna need some sort of non-stock kernel

Any particular kernel or rom anyone recommend? I am thinking bout just installing a kernel because i actually do like the sense ui somewhat but I backed up using clockworkmod to my sd card if I install a new kernel and rom will i be able to back up to how it is now easily with that backup?
the rom needs to support the kernel.

The stock rom will not likely support any non-stock kernels.
