From what to what? Using an external drive or something? If its a 5400rpm drive expect that...

What are you copying from and to? What size files?

Many factors affect copy speed. Your target HDD might be bottlenecking it. This is especially common on older laptops, which benchmark like this:

hdtunetest120421.png

Good luck copying faster than 40MB/sec on that. tongue.gif Most of the time it'll be under 30MB/sec.

Many USB3 chips also have a max speed. I think for most enclosures it's about 75-90MB/sec, but you'd have to link us to your external/enclosure for us to find out.

And of course, what size files? You'll get way more speed copying 350MB files than you will copying 1MB files, or < 100KB files.

As others said what size files to/from what devices? Are you doing any other transfers over the same bus at the same time? 5400rpm drives, especially 2.5" drives, will usually cap out around 40-50MB/s tops even over USB 3.0. If you're copying larger files to 7200rpm drives you may want to check your USB 3.0 drivers as well. I had a problem with poor USB 3 performance until I reinstalled the drivers for my mobo. Still, I have an older 5400rpm 500GB notebook drive I put in a USB 3 enclosure that usually caps out around 45MB/s at the best of times. If the hardware is slow it won't matter how fast the interface you're transferring through is.
