Upgrading RAM - Matching?

Thread Starter
Hey all - Just as a disclaimer, I'm sure this is answered somewhere, but I'm on my thin client in a training class at work, and let's just say, things are moving slow! So sorry for redundancy if already answered.

I currently have 8gb of Corsair Vengeance (2x4gb):
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233144

I'm thinking about going to 16gb, but I might have a slight problem. I don't think the tall heat spreaders actually fit under my Hyper 212 EVO, unless I actually bump the fan up the heat sink a bit to make it fit. That being said, it's not exactly a clean look to do that. I want to know, what are the important things to look at when pairing two different sets of memory? I know they need to be in the corresponding dual channel slots (1&3, 2&4), but don't know what else. Mine are currently:

Cas Latency - 9
Timing - 9-9-9-24
Volts - 1.5V
DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)

Of those, what should I be looking at? Basically, I'm looking at a lower profile set to complete the upgrade. Thanks for the help guys,
BPB

You could simply remove the heat spreader from the RAM module... It'll run perfectly fine without it.

If I'm going to be buying new RAM, wouldn't it make sense to buy one that just doesn't have a spreader?

Are you planing on reusing your current 8GB or buying a complete new 16GB kit?
why not just get 2 of these samsung kits and sell your vengence..
http://www.overclock.net/t/1210482/amazon-samsung-2x4gb-low-voltage-ddr3-1600-kit-for-47-ocing-to-2400

of you can do what i did with my EVO is put the fan facing the exhuast fan and pulling air through the heatsink and out the exhuast.. i had to do this so i could fit in my 16GB of ripjawsX smile.gif

I was planning on that. Which is why I was wondering what I needed to match from one pair to the next.

I've got it set up as a push/pull right now, but that was more because I happened to have the extra fan laying around. If I end up with more vengeance, I'll probably make it just a pull (not much of a difference from what I hear).

They look really low indeed. I am keeping my vengeance. It works perfectly well, so I need to add in addition. What specifically do I need to look for when having 2 separate pairs?

Check these out then. Low profile heatsinks with CL9 1600 1.5V Link

I think these would fit under the fan. My ram has similar heatsinks and they fit under my Scythe Mugen 2.

Here is some low profile Vengence memory if you wanted to try to reuse your current DIMMs. Infact I think it is the same memory with different heatsink. Link
