[Forbes] ArenaNet CEO Believes Guild Wars 2 Will be Most Successful MMO Ever - Page 2

Having played beta, this game is a total joke. 3-4 attack abilities for a class and they call WoW a dumbed down mmo. How is a F2P mmo going to be the most successful? There must be a lot of hats to buy.

Don't get me wrong, the game does indeed look promising... But there is simply too much hype. People will buy the game expecting miracles, and I really doubt it's going to deliver enough to satisfy that craving for "mindblowingness". I predict a similar situation as with SWTOR. Mayhap a bit better, but not by much.

You must be new to the F2P genre, did you know that Path of Exile (PoE) is in beta and was selling beta keys with attached points to buy stuff in their shop. They made $200,000 just off of that, some people even donated $1,000 for some really cool rewards. Look at Minecraft, that I imagine is a record breaking amount of copies sold while in beta. Don't act like F2P can't be successful. Also in GW2 they promote weapon swapping (from what I recall) that changes the abilities you had. GW1 had I think it was 6-8 abilities and did very well for a F2P mmo.

I never said they wont make money. He clearly said they will be the "most successful mmo". That is about beating WoW which peaked at 15-16million subs last year @ 15$ a month .

No, he did not say they will be the most successful MMO.

We’re in it to win it this time,” said O’Brien. “We were number two to World of Warcraft with Guild Wars, now we want to beat them. We’ll be satisfied when the Guild Wars 2 is the most successful MMO. I think we have something unique here and players are going to see it and understand why dynamic events are a way better content model than people have experienced before in online worlds. Word-of-mouth will get people to understand that we really are doing something new and different. The sky’s the limit once this game is out. Online worlds have a networking effect. People will bring friends to Guild Wars 2. We hope all the people who play the beta weekend will tell their friends about it.”

Earlier in the article they state that they sold 7 million copies world wide of GW1. Doesn't seem like that far of a stretch to try to close the gap. Will they end up topping WoW? Probably not but they have the right attitude to stay competitive.

Edit: I also believe WoW hit a record low of THIS year at about 8-8.5 million subs.

Oh, well then misleading topic is misleading. I didn't bother to read the full article because i generally dislike the game. Also I don't think WoW ever disclosed how many current subs they have, only that they have lost around million or two subs.

That depends on your style of play though. Yes, you have 4 main attack buttons, but combat in GW2 is dynamic compared to WoW's 1-2-3-2-3-1 rotation combat. In WoW can you dodge attacks or actually have to care "a lot" about positioning outside of raids? WoW has auto-attack and the amount of abilities for each class have made it so cookie-cutter because everyone has the same abilities/mechanics. Saying you have 4 attack abilities is misleading. How long did you play the Beta?

My main reasons why I think GW2 has the potential to be very successful versus other recent releases. I'm not saying it'll top WoW, just be successful.

  1. WoW is starting its downwards slope and MoP is gonna seal the deal probably. As a former WoW player, everyone in my guild always tended to try out the latest MMO in the months leading up to an expansion because the current expansions' content was stale. In this case, it would have been GW2. Somewhat accurate MMO subscriber numbers
  2. It has better graphics and animations than most MMO's. Snappy UI from the videos I've seen on Youtube and fluid, engaging combat. Less clutter on your UI means more time paying attention to game rather than your keyboard.
  3. Removal of the Holy Trinity <---- Current traditional-MMO killer at the moment I think because people are tired of it and it dissuades strong team gameplay
  4. No subscription fees, if anyone is willing to quit playing WoW or other MMO for 4 months to play GW2, then there is no money lost to them
  5. High production quality from a producer that has experience making MMO's unlike Bioware or Trion Worlds.

Just my opinion. But those are my reasons I'm getting it. I'm done with WoW and SWTOR, I'm ready for something new.

They do disclose it at stockholder meetings, it makes sense for them to. But I hope the CEO's motivation follows through the rest of the company so they will remain competitive and keep getting "hungry" for the #1 spot, the key is to aim high.

Pretty much this.

The only thing I'm excited about with GW2 is the large PVP... other than that it's just going to be like any other MMO or game out there.

Also, is it just me or does it seem like GW fans are almost as annoying as ME3 fans?
