[Forbes] ArenaNet CEO Believes Guild Wars 2 Will be Most Successful MMO Ever - Page 3

They used to always talk about how they had 12 million subs on the site and the few TV commercials they did. They've stopped since they announced that they were losing subscribers. Apparently you played the beta but don't realize that it isn't F2P, and that if you have 3-4 skills you are completely clueless with how the skill system works. The lowest any class can have is around 16. However, the elementalist can have nearly 50 with the 4 attunements and elemental weapons. The game is buy to play. Guild Wars 1 had 2 additional campaigns and 1 expansion released much quicker than other MMO's. Coupled with a cash shop, it gave them a continuous source of revenue.

THere are more than 3-4 abilities for a class, and WoW's game mechanics are getting to tiresome and unbalanced. Which is why GW2 will be successful as its primary goal is to get prioritize balance and make competition a lower priority. It's like having a social network like Facebook, but in an MMO realm. A F2P MMO easily has the potential to become extremely successful. Look at Nexon's MMOs, most of which are free and very successful. GW2 however, is on a more grand scale than Nexon's games. GW2 plays like Skyrim, and Skyrim was indeed successful. GW2 introduces the holy grail of 3D gaming - z-axis, meaning the ability to JUMP and practically go anywhere on the map.

Just gonna say, all the gw 2 is mostly hype. The game isn't very good. The combat system compared to the Tera is decades behind. Its not true action orientated, it just press 1 2 3 , and dodge. Combat animations are terrible compared to Tera as well. Where Tera combat your abilities to need to make contact and you don't physical attacks unlike Gw2. Gw 2 has great questing but is behind on Combat mechanics, which really everyone should be looking for mmorpg. Because good combat means good PVE, and good PVP. Flame on fan boys.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate what GW2 is trying to do, and will buy it myself as a secondary/backup MMO that I can log into for a change of pace every now and then without having to sub. And I definitely appreciate Arenanet stating that they will not be satisfied until they have the best MMO. However, I hope they are prepared for the long haul, because it will never be the best MMO.

As Lavitz has pointed out there are numerous design choices in the game which will not appeal to enough to make it the most successful. Not to mention it leaves out some entire MMO game segments like Raiding which a significant subset of MMO players do still enjoy. Again, I think it will be a nice game for what it is, but I just hope ANet has their expectations in check.

Yes, but Tera is monthly fee so you save some bank there. GW2 combat system is perfect as it is -- not too boring yet not too exciting. It's a role-playing game, not an action game. And you do physical attacks in GW2... where are you getting this from? The reason why GW2 appeals so much to me is that it is focused on quests and less on grinding, and it introduces and reinforces the concept of dynamism AND world vs world vs world. I'll have fun participating in some of these epic wars with my mates while you sit and complain about the combat system. thumb.gif

I'm excited for the game because Guild Wars is more of a PVP centric game, I LOVE pvp but so many games are mostly PVE centric. I personally can't wait for this, I'll know if I'll like it or not to begin with based on a beta weekend. Yes it's just a short period of time and not at max level, however, I know I'm not gonna like D3 that much based on what I played in the beta. I will enjoy D3 however it wont be what I thought it could be.

Seems like, I really wanted SWTOR to succeed, but they just did nothing to really make the genre their own. It could of been amazing if they took some chances and brought some new elements.
Hopefully Guild Wars 2 will make the difference. I'll be trying it out for sure. (When I have time)

Kind of funny, as if the CEO is gonna ever come out and say, "I think our game will end up around middle of the pack."

I really, really, really enjoyed GW1. That said, I am being overly cautious with any game touting the letters MMO. SWTOR really let me down, and when you add in the notion that there will be a cash shop for this game...

I'll wait and see how this one plays out.

Rofl, what? 3 or 4? An elementalist for example has 4 elements with 5 actions each. That alone is 20. On top of that a weapon swap completely changes those actions, uniquely, and an elementalist can equip 5 weapons and an off-hand only focus. Oh, and that only includes the left side of the bar.. not what you can equip on the right side, which is a pool you get to chose from of about another 20-30 abilities. Did you fail math in addition to deductive reasoning?

If you're going to troll, at least pick something that is a semi feasible argument.
