Thanks

I should get the prototype PCBs early next week, then I will have some more progress to update.

FedEx dropped off a package with my PCBs wheee.gif

472

They are really nice looking: coolsmiley03.png

Close up:

404

The little rectangular pads are 1.5x0.5 mm and the holes are about 0.6mm in diameter. Very happy with the PCB quality.

Anyway, time to start soldering and hoping I did a perfect layout, so many things can go wrong: holes too small, mirrored components, connectors, wrong pin assignment etc. Any of which could make the whole thing go up in smoke worriedsmiley.gif

OK, time to get some components on those PCBs.

Always start with the smallest components, and if there are any SMD components, start with those.

So first I need to do these little SMD mosfets:

469

They are really tiny, here compared to the solder iron tip I'm using:

380

The tip is about 3.5mm and the component is 5mm wide. You would think a smaller tip would work better, but personally I prefer this tip size. Doesn't look possible to do, but as long as you got a fairly steady hand it isn't that difficult:

I had to offset the first one a bit as there is a via hole a bit too close under the component, but the first one went fine:

326

When a mess-up happens, like here (I of course only did this for illustrative purposes rolleyes.gif)

435

Then this is your friend:

363

it's a copper wick, about 2.5mm in width:

398'

Use it like this: (I like to add a bit of flux on it first as it's raw copper and oxidizes very quickly)

450

And problem fixed coolsmiley03.png (the brows stuff is just left over flux, can easily be removed with alcohol or cleaner)

450

OK, that's the hard part done, next comes resistors and other components in order of height, always do lowest components first.

Found my pcb flux cleaning liquid, so just a final shot of the cleaned up mistake (remember the whole thing is only 5mm wide)

371

Ok, enough playing around, I need to get the rest of the components in. Not sure I have everything I need, but I should get some more components tomorrow.

I am still missing a few components, capacitors etc. I'm nearly finished on 2 boards (being optimistic that they will work and that I'm planning to add 2-3 of them in my box)

404

I will get the rest of the components tomorrow I hope.

So far I haven't found any faults in the boards, but I probably just jinxed them by saying that worriedsmiley.gif

More updates tomorrow I hope.

Boards came out nice!
Good luck building, kinda jealous..I love doing this kinda work. Believe it or not I find it relaxing.

nice work! I was just about to build a simpler pwm control using the MIC502 chip, now you have me rethinking lol. I like what you have designed here smile.gif

That's what I built wink.gif it works well if you chance the timing capacitor from 0.1 uF to 100 pF
