So I am calling it what it is, a gimmick.
Using old software to pad numbers and claim they got a world record. It's like me going back and benchmarking pacman, oh god it's so awesome playing this old game, wow it must be a world record.
So is there a specific reason why they would use old software that likely does not even support multithreading? Oh right so they get a huge score and say they broke a world record. The whole reason it is pointless is who even uses it anymore, no one is benchmarking on 3dmark2001 so theres no way to compare since NO one uses it anymore.
No one uses it anymore, except every benchmarker out there. 3dmark 01 for example is a 3d benchmark that depends heavily on the the cpu, cpu speed is crucial to getting a good score with it & it is a great benchmark to showcase what a new cpu is capable of.
