Dual-channel ram

Thread Starter
So I was thinking about my setup and never really thought about ram slots. If two of them are one color and the other two are a different color, these colors correspond to different channels. If I have two ram sticks and they are each on the same color slot, are they running in dual-channel because the computer is smart enough to realize there are only two sticks or do I need to have the sticks on different color slots?

If the sticks are in the same color slots, and they are a matched pair, then they run in dual channel mode.

A pair of DIMM should go on the same colour slots. In your user manual for the motherboard it should tell you which channels you should use first. It will look something like this

Please check the MB manual. Most of MBs have a preferred setup for dual channel. Like what is shown in BlueTac's figure. smile.gif

It depends on the board.
Earlier boards that were initially deploying dual channel setups like 939 platforms occasionally marked the same channels as the same colors.

It seems in order to prevent consumer derpage the standard was more made to make dual channel as the same colored slots.

It should be outlined in your mobo manual which is which, although a Slot 1 + Slot 4 deployment should always end up utilizing both channels.

I am not 100% sure on that. I think it depends on your motherboard. Safest bet? Look at the manual for your motherboard and it will tell you which slots to use for dual channel based on the # of sticks used.
