Upgrade Help

Thread Starter
First things first i use my comp for gaming, surfing the net and a bit of picture editing, just wanted to get that out the way. I play games like BF2, quite demanding. Just played BF2 on almost all low settings and its very slooow. - crunch time: i need to upgrade

It must be something like 3 years since i last upgraded my system and its definetely in need of one now! I recently did a complete re-install of everything and formated my C drive so its nice and fresh . I read on a thread that my graphics card runs much better on a faster processor (which is pretty old now as you can see). I've been trawling through threads and cant decide what to go for.

I want to primarily upgrade my processor and mobo but need help on what to choose, thing is i want to spend aprox. £120 i guess (this could change), but i think my graphics card and memory will be outdated and not work with the new hardware?? So i want to future proof and cover my back. Am i asking the impossible?? I'm not too bothered if i have to buy new memory as my current stuff isn't great quality stuff... However im not too keen on upgrading my graphics card yet,but i want my new mobo to support a good graphics card when i eventually get one. Demanding eh? sorry

Is AMD still the way to go for gaming?
I'm just finding it hard to choose a processor and mobo which would work really well together.

Sorry the threads long, your help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Tom

Hardly surprising i suppose if you were to run at full specs, i will definetely consider 1.5 - 2 gb or memory when i upgrade

If anyone has any advice for mobo's and processors then i'd like to know which memory is also compatible and the best for my system.

Oh, i'd also like to apologise for how similar this thread is to Nate's but we still are in different situations.

Thanks

i would look at some decent 939 systems . . possibly a 3700+ with a nice board and that would leave you some cash to spend on ram. . . i hear the 3700's OC nicley and since conroe came out you may be able to find some cheap/used . . . same with mobo's. . .

ok thanks, so socket 939, would you recommend AMD dual cores or not? They seem pricey but i guess they are the future

I'm looking to buy my stuff on ebuyer preferably, unless anyone knows of anywhere better? (from UK)
They only have 3 AMD x2's and no Conroe's on ebuyer's site ...

im only saying 939 because they're in the process of changing to am2 and it will probably be cheaper. To go AM2 you will find mostly new boards and CPU's and (thus) a little more pricey for the same current peformance. . .however going AM2 will allo for an upgrade path in the future. . . if youu can streach your budget a lil more i would go with AM2. . but the one you have stated for a mobo and cpu (taking in into acc. near future ram upgrade) i would go 939

Ok, i'll prob go for a AMD X2 or a very good single core AMD processor, and i'll go for a 939 too

I just need specifics now please, which one's to go for?? Which one's will work best whith each other?

And once i'ce paired 2 up, which memory will work well, is it worth going DDR2 now? If so i'll have to get a mobo which supports it.

Your only good option for a 939 that would afford you the option to up to a PCIE16 vid card later would be the ASRock Dual SATA II MB which supports AGP or PCIe16 and uses DDR RAM.
It's a good OCer, not the best but good. You would probably want to avoid a 9x CPU with the MB to afford a more flexable OC.

...sorry what do you mean by a 9x CPU? I wouldn't mind bending over my budget if its worth it, i've got the money, i just dont want to go overboard.

9x CPUs, 3000+ Venice, X2 3800+, Opty 144 and the Opty 165.
They would still OC well in that board, they just don't offer the flexability of a 10x CPU.
