I can see your complaint if your one of those guys that was super into those type of games back in the day. Half-Life is a story driven FPS it's almost a completely different Genre then an arena based shooter. I liked arena shooters as well but personally I actually think FPS has moved in the right direction. It's evolved and a lot of people don't like it but I think it's for the best.
BTW totally agree with you on Edward Scissorhands, lol.
But anyway I find Halo enjoyable for completely different reasons then the story and Mass Effect I don't even know what I think after the third one. To each his own. I think Half-Life 2 though is probabally one of the five best games ever made. Episode 2 in particular is just amazing but I kind of consider the episodes to be the same game.
I think what seperates Half-Life story from other gaming stories is that the writing is just on a different level. Valve's writers I think are unmatched in the game industry. Even devs like Bioware I don't think have nearly the quality of writing in their games. I include the Portal games in that too. Portal 1 and 2 are probabally the wittiest and funniest games I've ever played.

Yeah man your first paragraph pretty much summed me up perfectly. I can respect how some people really like a nice story for their FPS I'm just bummed that us arena type lovers are pretty much left out in the cold b/c of it. I mean we can either play Quake 3 arena, the latest Unreal or CS, all of which are old as dirt by now lol.

I mean I can say that the most fun I've ever had PC gaming was when I'd have like 3 or 4 friends over and we'd lan up, get online and just play Arena shooters all freaking night long for like 12 hours straight. So much fun and so many many "I Can't believe you/I just pulled that off" moments!

Isn't it crazy how those days just don't seem to exist any more? It's either that or I'm completely out of the loop on LAN's locally or worth driving to... tongue.gif

Quake 3 engine (id Tech 3) > Call of Duty 1 (id Tech 3) > Call of Duty 2 (IW Engine 2.0) (OpenGL to DirectX) > Call of Duty 4 (IW Engine 4.0)
Still the same engine technically, but continued to be built on to improve the graphics.

Yet the majority of the source games look the same....COD looks like garage as well and has since 2006.

I've said this previously in many of the Valve and Half-Life threads that appear. Episode Three will not exist. Valve has hinted several times that it's going to be Half-Life 3. Because they wanted to get the story nailed down to end the HL2 story arc, what they want to do is more than what the Episodic plan could hold, and more than likely is the cause of the many delays, as what I got out of Gabe's comments about it. So basically instead of waiting for another 5-6 years after EP3 was released in the original 2010 timeframe, they decided to combine the two games, so to speak. The way the story is sounding out, this will go beyond what EP3 would have ever been possible. What's going to happen after the Borealis events (assuming that what happened at the end of EP2 doesn't lead to an altered course) is up to anyone.

With the way they were hinting it in EP2, I'm expecting these things will have something to do with what's happening in HL3: G-Man and his plans shown more clearly, what's going on with Aperture Science and the Borealis and what's on the ship and why Eli wanted it destroyed, eventual killing of a Combine Advisor, discovery of Judith Mossman and her discoveries, and possibly Barney Calhoun coming back into the picture. Not necessarily happening in any particular order, but I have a feeling that a lot in that list will be explained and much more revealed.

All I gotta say is, keep an eye on Microsoft's or Sony's press conferences during E3. Valve will more than likely show something during one (or both) of them.

Riou, paulerxx is clearly right because he said so.

Seriously though, I don't understand whats so hard about understanding that a engine can continually evolve? Thus no need for a "new" engine.
