Questions in regards to shooting samples

Thread Starter
I have about 500 samples and I have spent the week trying to find the perfect shot but have come up empty. I am using my 35-55mm lens on my Nikon D60. I am trying to take quality pictures of some materials we offer for an eCommerce site. Some issues I am having problems with is taking pictures of Carbon Fiber. I can get light infractions in the black. What is suggested?? I am mostly taking the picture, resizing to about half and setting the canvas to 500 x 500 saved out as PNG interlaced. I was debating on getting a flash and angle up, but Id rather not blow money with out first getting some options.

I did google "how to photograph fabric swatches" but nothing great.

try shifting the lights to be as parallel to the fabric as possible. this will give you the most amount of texture (assuming that's what you are going for).

how about posting a sample also so we can see.

I will post up later, I have spent hours with angles, tripod, alternative lighting with spot lights in multi direction.

If you want some cheap lighting, get those halogen work lamps you can get at Home Depot, and aim them up to bounce off the ceiling. $20-$30 bucks vs the cost of a flash. Also, useful for other things.

what weren't you happy about? If it's white balance, this can be fixed. If its' quality of light, etc, then yeah, obviously studio strobes, etc would be ideal.

Idea: take a snapshot for us (phone pic, whatever) of the area that you'll be working in, and then a sample of what you're shooting so we can get a better idea of how to help.

"the lighting is way off" doesn't help. What do you mean by way off?

If you're having trouble with reflections shooting carbon fiber (assuming it's woven laminate), you'll need a circular polarizer to cut them down a bit.
