FPS drops in BF3

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

so as the title says I get fps drops in bf3. They are rather unpredictable and I have no idea why this is happening. I get solid fps above 30 most of the time but sometimes it drops to 10 just for a sec. It's enough to get me killed tho.
I think it could be the ram (only have 4gb). I opened task manager during gameplay and most of the memory is being used exept for around 60MB. I then checked the GPU with GPU-z and get 900+ memory usage. What do you guys think?

Any help is appreciated thumb.gif

i have played battlefield on a build that only had for gigs of ram and it ran fine (amd 6850, amd 630 @3.108GHz, 4GB ddr3 sdram at 1333Mhz) it could just be your ram. but look at the specs of the rest of you build. if you have anything overclocked that could also affect it. post some more specs on the build that you were using for this.

If you have the textures on ultra I would put them down to high as they eat up vram. I used to get the fps drops when I had a 5850 1gb and textures at ultra and dropping them to high got rid of the sudden big drops. With my 580 1.5gb I can run the ultra textures with no drops.

I had a similar problem when I had 4GB of RAM, upgrading to 8GB solved that issue.

If you are running on ultra though, it's probably VRAM causing the dips as said above ^

sounds like you have a ram bottleneck. bf3 is known to push ram usage beyond 4gb, so i think upgrading to 8gb would fix your problem

I think the drops are caused by a VRAM bottleneck. I get this when I put the textures on Ultra instead of High on my 1GB card.
Also you can try to close all the programs before start BF3 to save some ram.

Thank you very much guys. I had the suspicion that it was the ram quantity. I am playing on all high settings btw. No ultra. I will probably buy some more ram. I don't want to make another thread so I will just ask a couple of questions here.
1. I currently have 4GB of 1600MHz 1.7-1.9V ram. Should I buy another 4gigs or go for 8GB of new 1.65V ram? They both cost 50€ here.
2. For 10€ more I get 8GB of 1866MHz ram. Is the faster speed noticeable? Or worth it?

The speed difference won't be noticeable, but I think 1.7 -1.9v DDR3 is a little dated.. I'd get some fresh 1.5v stuff if it was me.

Thank you for your tip. I am not a pro when it comes to ram but from what you wrote the lower the voltage the better?
