If you believe Wikipedia, it'll be released in 2 parts. The first, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will come out Dec. 14, 2012. The second, The Hobbit: There and Back Again, will release Dec. 13, 2013.

Personally I don't care which way I watch the film, it honestly does not seem to affect my experience from what I can tell, because when I think back more than a month I can't remember which movies I saw in 2D vs those I saw in 3D (except Avatar maybe).
3D lowers the colour quality by the way it's presented. Watching Avatar in 3D and then in Blu-Ray and it was staggeringly different. I've never watched a 3D film since. There's plenty of evidence for 3D being sucky and gimmicky. Imho it ruins the atmosphere of a film when it's viewed in 2D.

And 2D doesn't lower the quality at all. I'm talking pictyure quality. It's unquestionably clearer and more crisp in 2D.

And I agree with you. I was just stating that many would say 3D is a quality in itself that any 2D film is lacking. Imagine, for example, walking around with an eye patch on all the time. No depth perception is something that many people have to deal with, and it's definitely not a good thing.

It would be nice to have 3D without any loss of quality.
