Yeah, it would. You have less layers between the core and the heatsink which is always good.

That would only lead to them selling less chips. People who are looking to OC them will refuse to buy them at $300 a pop, if it means once the chip dies your left to no option but to fork out another $300. You might as well save yourself the headache now and buy a Sandy-E and OC it to 5Ghz.

I think Intel already said somewhere that it is a combination of IB's architecture and the TIM that is causing the higher temps. So if we can at least get a better contact between the die and the IHS, things may turn out better for everyone. It really looks lame to see that there's just a pile of goop between the IHS and the die... not a very scientific or sure-fire way to do things, especially for your brand spanking mid to high tier part.

yeah exactly. Of course removing the IHS etc. is going to drop the temps a bit but it's not gonna remove the difference we're seeing between SB and IB.

We already had SF3D remove the IHS from his IB and he didn't get any drastic temp differences. Max OC was increased by something along the lines of 50MHz.

That guy from the SF3D thread said that he had to put the IHS back on---with "better" paste---to secure the CPU in the socket. That's what I thought.. maybe he didn't think of a shim?

Right before I bricked my GTX 560, I had the IHS off with a Gelid Icy. The Gelid already had it at 47C load to begin with, but it went down a few degrees--high 40's to low 40's. That can be hard to mange when your cooling is already dominating.

Oh, oldschool IHS removals from P4's and things would have had minor gains if I remember right. But lapping the cooler base flat was an important step, and ensuring the mount was adjusted perfectly, and shims for protection were important. Socket clamps are another issue now.

I could probably bring myself to try it on an IB, if everything was terrible and I had no better options.
