I see a few owners on hwbot forum that say they've got no problems with air cooling. Maybe they have cold weather, but I think I will get one.

Anyone who thinks all the difference in temp scaling between Sandy and Ivy can bne attributed to the under IHS TIM used is almost certainly mistaken.

It's probably a factor, but not likely the biggest one.

And no, Intel isn't doing this to limit OCing, but to save money. Intel, or any other successful business, will cut costs where ever it's possible to do so, if they can still meet design targets while doing so. They are a business; they aren't your friends, your allies, nor are they trying to cut you a deal, they are out to get your money.

Me think Intel wants to control overclocking on Ivy Bridge perhaps to get people to buy into the enthusiast (3930K) market, I mean if Intel used higher quality TIM or dolder and was able to OC past 5GHz on average no one would bother with Sandy Bridge-E. I can't think of another reason why Intel would pull this crap and refuse to answer why (greed), they can do as they please now that there the only kid on the block. Intel chose to devalue their product knowing full well what they were up to, X79 here I come! Intel better not try this cheap TIM with Ivy Bridge-E because that would go against paying more as an enthusiast!

No way would using solder TIM result in 5GHz average OCs on air. You are talking a few degrees difference in temps, max.

Here is the post he is talking about. Same temperature problems at high overclock still tho. At 4.6-4.7Ghz temps are fine, but once you go any higher the temperature climbs like crazy. Tho if this data is true, and if you can reach the standard 4.5Ghz of a 2500k on a 3570k without breaking the temps listed below. Then Ivy would be worth getting as for its core performance over Sandy.

He did actually run the chip without the IHS and said that it helped a bit with throttling and gave him about 50mhz extra. Also told the users of his forum not to bother with removing the IHS.

All of which is what has been continually reported from various sources, both prior to and after the official (paper) launch.

Ivy appears to do 4.6-4.8GHz without issue, on air, which is more than enough for it perform better than the vast majority of OCs that can be achieved on SB with the same cooling.

People were just expecting more, for whatever reason.

True, though I doubt that the contact was really bad. Not enough to make a huge difference at least.
