Could someone test this ? Remove the IHS and just put the aircooler / watercooler straight on it ? With temps before and after, of course.

Indeed.

I was involved in a major cost saving excercise a while back. The aim was to reduce the cost of manufacturing by 3 pence (~5 cents) per unit. We only managed something like ~1.5p but the project was still considered a success.

We produced over 500,000 of these units per month.

Small cost savings per item on large quantities can make a big difference to a companies profit. Whilst you may think you get shafted, a lot of this money will go into things like R&D so the next product will be even better.

Doesn't really make sense to me from a cost-saving perspective. The unlocked processors are already targeted at a limited market, and many already have ivy bridge ready motherboards. Limiting the overclocking by using cheap TIM is going to give people on SB no reason to upgrade. So by saving a few pennies, they essentially lose a great deal of potential customers.
