[TPU] Ivy Bridge Temperatures Could Be Linked To TIM Inside Integrated Heatspreader: Report - Page 6

Why can't they just sell the K-versions without an IHS?
I'd rather don't have an IHS than an IHS using thermal paste.

It is very easy to crack the die without an IHS protecting it.

After I removed the IHS on my Athlon X2 some years ago, I cracked the die while trying to mount the CPU heatsink.

Just imagine how many RMAs Intel would get if they sold it without an IHS.

Interesting. Someone needs to test this before people start shelling out mad money this upcoming Monday!

EDIT: They say in the article that they believe this might just be for engineering samples only and that retail units could ship with flux-less solder like in SB. Guess we'll see.

Spread the word to prevent sales... Until they fix this.

Don't get shafted!

If the retail units do have flux-less solder and it actually makes a big difference in temps, Intel is really stupid for putting TIM in the engineering samples, since that's what all the reviews are based on.

I doubt Intel's that stupid, but we'll see.

Cannot believe they didn't test. They don't know that's what causes the heat.

Thanks for the education, public school left that out :-)

You owe me a beer mate, just spilled the one I had laughing at this!

I'd like to see a test of what temps a person would get if they were ballsy enough to remove the heat spreader.

To me, it makes more sense selling(more of, developing) a model without an integrated GPU. Just a thought though, i've brought that up many times before, and have realized there are some situations where on-board is just good enough.

all of the heatsinks for the pre IHS era also attached straight to the plastic processor socket. the first intel processor to come standard was the P4 (some early p2 models had them as well) which was because it was a through-motherboard design that put alot more pressure on the CPU to maximize heat conductivity
