I'll just buy a WD VelociRaptor 10,000RPM for my OS and games. It's not as fast as an SSD, but it's still fast and there are no silly firmware updates for it.
Actuallyyyy.... there are. Even spinning platter drives have firmware updates. It's just the nature of PC components.
Most people will never update the firmware on any of their hardware. It's not the biggest deal in the world. Mostly an enthusiast thing for fixing bugs in brand new untested cutting edge technology that the average user will never touch, or to squeeze a tiny bit of extra performance out of a device.
Hell, my MOUSE has firmware updates.
