advice on gaming pc

Thread Starter
Hi I have been trying to put together a gaming pc on a budget of around 500.00 for my 15 yr. old son and would greatly appreciate any advice.
This is a little over budget and doesn't include case or Hard Drive
Here is what I have come up with :

Motherboard : Asus M5A99X EVO

Processor : Phenom II X4 960T

Graphics : Asus GTX560

PSU : RaidMax Hybrid 2 630W

RAM : G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8Gb

OS : Windows 7 Home Premium
You'll also need a dvd drive, roughly $20.00. I've not dealt with Raidmax before but the rest looks good for that type of build.

Edit - are you looking at newegg.com or amazon for your pricing or just what is the best bang for your buck no matter where it comes from as long as they are reputable?

I have been pricing on newegg.com haven't checked amazon but it really doesn't matter. I would like to get the price down a little bit but I dont want to sacrafice performance.

Well with amazon it's no tax which can help but it depends on the item. I'll work on a build and post it, I'm sure more folks will come into the fray with this, OCNers love these threads.
Edit @ zydrix, yeah I've seen some on here with the psu just didn't want to remark on it without knowledge of the brand.

right now the APU is the best price/performance and most of the time exceeds your performance needs.
Ask your local computer shop for windows 7 OS. I have got a 64bit of ultimate for $30 dollars here in SLC.

Fixed per XD suggestion..

i have seen a few raidmax psus come into the shop i work for....the few i have seen were failing.....dont know how long they were in service and half werent kept properly airdusted so take what i say with a grain of salt. i know for a fact the shop i work for does not discount windows 7 at all. we buy from a store and dont mark up but the customer pays what we pay nonetheless. unless shops have a maps deal with microsoft they dont get deals on windows 7 even if they buy in bulk.

Get rid of the weak low quality Raidmax PSU.  Never skimp on the PSU, your entire system relies on it.  There are also better PSUs for price.  The Rosewill RG530 is one I will recommend.

At this moment by buying Windows 7 on Newegg you are ripping yourself off, you could be spending $14 less on DiscountMountain for the same legal product.

^ I call extreme unwise on Jester435's single channel memory suggestion for the unlocked A8 APU.  That is a 50-100% performance loss depending on app right there.
