I agree Tomshardware is an excellent point of reference and I like to use that website to learn about component speed and their relative inter dependencies. But I am gaming on a 1680X1050 monitor and the GTX 480 is a bit overkill for that resolution, so it really does make sense, I see 60+ almost all the time even with settings maxed.
Edit: Sorry didn't notice the OS requirement, but there was that one post linking to like 30$ windows. That's pretty cheap. They could also just slap the windows 8 beta on there(free download), I'm sure with a little tweaking it runs games well enough.

So when you game on a higher resolution you need a better CPU???

Well that's not how it's supposed to work.... but maybe Skyrim is an exception to the rule. Honestly I don't play enough modern games to say, and I'm trying to keep my advice based on real world experience because there are already tons of reviews out there if someone wants comparative data. I mostly just play Skyrim and Starcraft 2, both of which are pretty much maxed out with my current hardware.

Yes, when you game at higher resolutions, it uses both your GPU and CPU more, people do not realize this because most of the time, when comparing CPUs (ie: benchmarks), the GPU will not work hard at lower resolutions, (thus giving you a CPU bottleneck) so you can distinguish what CPU performs better in games.

@ higher resolutions, your CPU will be working harder than at lower resolutions, but your GPU will be working exponentially harder, thus, normally giving you a GPU bottleneck.

Yeah that's a good explanation, and it really varies quite a lot game to game.

So if you really want to know how your games are going to perform you have to be sure to find out how it performs on a system (very)similar to your own.(same hardware, resolution, in game settings, operating system)

For example: I know BF3 has been reported to run much worse on 4GB than 6GB+, but it's just about the only game to show a significant improvement from more RAM.(so far)

very true.. BF3 on 4gb of ram was the reason that I bought 8gb of ram.. It would max out my system and then when I added 4 more gb of ram it now runs fine and never goes over 40% utilization

I would like to see where you obtained such a deal.

2600K $300+
RAM $40+
HDD $40+
PSU $50+
WIFI CARD $15+
GT 440 $50+ (still in the $80 range realistically)

And those are some low prices on components I listed already... so...

So.. .not counting, case, motherboard, Windows 7. We can forget about keyboard, mouse, and monitor on a site like this.

PC already done and working, i did not include windows 7 since i already have it, i did not include mouse/keyboard. and i did pull it off with. i did get most of these with discount coupons so... yeh its not impossible. already done and running and i said, office PC not a gaming one smile.gif i am just giving an example of what you can do with that money. iam not saying you should get the same specs, maybe you can pull it off getting a better PC smile.gif

Still, damn good deals if you did put a whole together PC with a 2600K and board for less than $500, and assuming it was all 'new' parts. Over half of that is the CPU alone! smile.gif
