Can I watch HD tv with this even though I dont have a converter box? Would I have to run an antenna to it. Since the tv ppl have gone to digital at the beginning of last year a regular antennae doesn't work anymore, you have to have the converter box which costs 50 bucks. We weren't worried about it at first since we had a line from comcast for free and just saw the regular hd channels,we actually gave our vouchers to a relative. Now two years later comcast has changed it where to see there channels you now need to buy their box. So long story short will this card convert the regular signal you would get with antennae or a pair of rabbit ears into hd to be viewed on tv or pc. Thanks sorry for long post slowly building my htpc.

Just trying to get the free over the air basic channels.

Rather than pay for a card and service you can just pay for tv through the internet and not need the converter card at all. I got rid of my card as soon as the local cable went digital and you need to have a little box just to get any signal to a tv. The days of antennas are over.

For free over the air channel, HVR-1250 is perfect for it. The price however, is not. Try to find it cheaper. ebay usually has them for quite cheaper.

It is easy to use, especially with Windows Media Center. I am using it right now and I can recommend it 100%. Just try to find it cheaper somewhere else.

I would grab a HD 750 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815306023 or if you want USB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815306019 great little tuners that work great. I have the HD 600USB on my HTPC and HD 650 PCIE card in my desktop, both work great.

You need to research what is available to you in your area. I live in the San Francisco bay area and they shut down air broadcasting a couple of years ago. Now you need to buy a digital box just to get those old few stations that still broadcast a signal. If you go the cable route you may also need a digital converter. We can no longer just hook the cable straight to the computer converter card. If you want to watch any sort of premium channel then you will need your cable companies set top box. All of those have monthly fees just for the rentals and the cost of the cable itself.

You can also check your local cable company to see if they offer internet cable and/or channels. We get HBO with our cable so for free we get access to HBO Go which is their on demand programming available on the internet and I can play it on my computer and also through my xBox. You can also search the internet for cable tv access through the internet. Just like your household cable there are monthly fees and it's been around for years.

There are a lot of options. Some cost a lot of money so you need to ask yourself how often would you really be watching tv on your computer. If it is a lot then get a package through your local cable company and get a converter card. The quality of the card also depends on if you want to just watch tv or record it and do some editing.

I use multiple tuners with NPVR because i just dun like to deal with the .wtv format in MCE and if u plan to remove adverts and archive your favorite recorded FTA stuff you could try out what works best for ya wink.gif

Yea I'm just like mercy flush. We have to get a converter box to watch (free) channels. I was just wondering if the card would do the converting part or would i still have to buy a separate box for that.
