Has anyone decapped a sandy bridge chip yet?

Just out of curiousity, are the IHS soldered to the silicon or is it just TIM under it. If it is just TIM and a rubber seal, I may remove mine and see how she does.

Yep IVY isn't soldered. They just use regular TIM, which people are pointing at being part of the heat issue.

iirc they are soldered, and that's why you don't hear about it often. you could sand it down til you hit the die however.

Yeah I was just checking. If I ever get ivy, I will probably decap it since that will knock temps down about 5C easily.

This has been a question that I have been weary of since I first herd of it. Refresh Ivy in a months time rolleyes.gif, Don't know if I want to jump on the wagon just yet.

I'm selling my 2500K.

And getting another one. It's too hard to guess how a naked IB will be, so I'll look out for results.

Sandy Bridge is soldered.. do not mess..I heated it up with a grinder (melted solder)
It worked until I lapped the silicon (cuz it was wedge-shaped) :kookoo.gif:
didn't get any better temps..may have been bad seating..then i lapped after a couple seatings n killed it.

BTW..people talking about lapping the IHS on a SB until it's paper-thin..It's more than 1/8" thick..you'll be lapping for 2 days
straight.

Just carefully polish till the plating (nickel) is removed just one side should be enough .since under its coper the copper should absorb the heat of inner nickel coating fast enough to prevent heat build up via nickel plating
post #10 of 20
There is no guess be it on ib or sb.the external nickel coating(90w)preven copper (400w)from maximizing heat transfer to the cool just remove nickel where cooler touch issue fixed(if indeed the heat spreader is nickel plated.)dont remove inner coating tho copper is like wet noodle nickel is doing the solidity part so remove only where cooler touch
