Sandy Bridge, OFFSET & Manual/Fixed voltage modes?

Hello everybody, I'm hoping I can get an answer from you OCN gurus

I have an Asus P8P67 Pro rev 3.1 and 2500k...its serving me great...currently its running at 4.8ghz and Vcore of 1.470...temps are fine, using a HAF X and Noctua NH-D14 really helps...its also prime 95 blend stable

I currently have the mobo settings to MANUAL Voltage versus Offset....I know manual voltage pretty much keeps a constant voltage no matter if idle or load...and offset lowers the volts in a low load or idle scenario....My question is, what exactly is the purpose of offset voltage? I have EIST, C1E, C3, C6 all enabled and MANUAL voltage....but when I open an instance of REALTEMP, it shows my temps going way down during a low load or idle scenario...shouldn't manual voltage keep my temps high, since its always running at a high voltage? If my temps are going down in idle, then isn't that the same as offset voltage? Except my voltage stays the same? What is the difference?

It's most likely because your core speed is decreasing (do you have turbo boost/speedstep enabled)? Also it is because you have no load on your cpu which causes more heat. Its like when you open a benchmark opposed to a game. Your GPU is at the same clock speed but it has more load on it so it's hotter.

OFFTOPIC:
YOUR CPU VOLTAGE IS WAY TOO HIGH. I HAVE A 3930K. 4.75ghz with a voltage of 1.4v. 1.47 is much too high dude, seriously. Post in the intel section on help with all of your motherboard settings.

THE VCORE IS TOO DAMN HIGH.

Ahh.

Well your temperatures are lower because your core-speed decreases and you have no load on your cpu.

Two things increase temperatures:

Voltage
Current

You have changed the voltage so it will be higher than normal.

Now the current in your CPU is less because you have little load on your cpu. In the task manager you can see that on idle it's typically at 2%. When you do a virus scan the maximum you'll see is 50%. When you play a game you can see between 70-100%. You will notice that between them if the other factors (core speed and voltage) remain the same you will get higher temperatures.

The current can also be changed by the corespeed. You wont notice extra speed when your cpu is just on the windows desktop so intel has made two technologies, speedstep and turbo boost. The lower coreclock means slightly less power and therefor heat.

Speedstep will decrease your corespeed when you do not need the performance of 4.8ghz. Speed step will sometimes find a middle ground around 3.6ghz Turbo boost wont affect it much when you have an overclock.

Voltage x Current = power ~ heat. (more power = more heat but cannot be directly compared on different cpus/designs/manufacturing process' etc).

Anyway thats why because you have more current in your cpu which explains the difference in temperature.

Is it bad to run manual/fixed voltage at all times? Even during low load, idle scenarios? I mean my temps look just fine

Or is offset voltage for those people who really want to squeeze every ounce on saving electricity?

It is for energy conservation. As stated before, there is a difference between voltage and current.

Your electric bill is going to show the amount of CURRENT you use, not the amount of voltage you use. The only way to see the real difference is to get a meter between your outlet and your computer to see how much current is dropped.

It is a very small amount though, speed step is the larger portion of power savings when down clocking at idle.

I guess I'll just keep it on manual voltage then...I'm not looking to squeeze every single penny out of my electric bill. and since I already have speedstep on, that will down clock my processor...and since you say thats the more important part...I'll just leave it at that

To go even further. If you had speedstep off, you would still use a considerable amount more at full LOAD then you will at idle. Even with the same clocks.

Why would Speedstep effective my "full load" usage? Isn't 4.8ghz full load.....4.8ghz. whether speedstep is on or off?
