Like I said, from the wall. So he'll be fine. Not that I would dare run my system with a 400W PSU but he'll definitely be fine.

but I feel 650w would be very nice.

GPU overclocked probably needs 13A@12v (156w)
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/graphics/display/asus-eah6870-directcu_4.html

His CPU even overclocked will need less than that.... and all the other miscellaneous components will need 1-2A@12v more. I say worst case, he will be using 26-28A on his 12v (out of 30A). He should be fine on that PSU... he will just need to use a Molex-PCIe adapters that come with the card.

Thank you all for all the reply's

I ran the PSU calc and I would be pulling around 350 it says with that card installed on my current rig, so I think I should be fine.

Thank you for saving me from spending money guys =D

It does.. but you don't understand. If a PSU is 80% efficient then that means only 80% of the power it draws from the wall is actually used, the other 20% is burnt up as heat.

So if he is drawing 500W from the wall, then the other 20% is just heat and won't be used to power the system, so that calculates into actually using 400W for the system.

If the PSU says it can output for example 500W, it can use 500W of actual usage, not just from the wall.

What happened? The PSU toasted lol
I think its better get a new PSU

Lol that willl happen with a cheap psu.
like others said you should be fine biggrin.gif 6870 uses about 150 watts (stock) + 110 watts for the cpu (stock) + 50-100 wats for the rest the system.. puts you at about 300 -350 watts for a ball park guestimate (closer to a worst case senario ballpark power consumption )

My Bestec 300w ran a 5770 at full load for months, even though the 12v rail technically should have blown.

The CM400 has enough amps and wattage on the 12v rail to split the load with a molex, I doubt it would have a problem running your system, even with the 6870.

If you were really worried, have you considered grabbing a 6850 if you can? Just give it a slight overclock, and it's a single 6-pin with a lower board TDP.

This power supply delivers a maximum of 480 W:
http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/Corsair-CX400W-Power-Supply-Review/750/8
(of course it probably isn't recommended to run it that high)
It powers my rig, and I never had it shut-down because of too much consumption, and I did overclock both my graphics card and my cpu. I might be pushing it, but it doesn't seem to complain at all. Although I did change the fan as it was becoming intrusive at higher loads, now it is quiet and cool.

Probably could get away with it if using a decent PSU, however I wouldn't for my own peace of mind.
