Questions about Ivy Hyper Threading

Thread Starter
I've read these articles

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyper-threading
http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/architecture-and-technology/hyper-threading/hyper-threading-technology.html

For the most part I understand what hyper threading (HT) is. I was comparing the 3770K and 3570K --> http://ark.intel.com/compare/65520,65523

1. What difference if any will I see with HT on the 3770K? AND with extra 2Mb of cache
2. Basically I do some programming for school and on my free time, occasionally play games, will I benefit at all from the i7 over the i5?

I know they are very similar or same (but differently worded) questions rolleyes.gif so sorry lol but yeah guys, any feedback will be greatly appreciated thumb.gif

For the gaming aspect the i5 would be more than enough.

But what type of programming do you do?

helping a buddy out making a game, so that and I have a personal project that involves monitoring hardware with C++.... not intense stuff (besides the game XNA). For school, a lot of Oracle and SQL server stuff... Some C#. I also just read that HT is useful if you run Fraps. I don't usually but thought it was worth mentioning. Also I don't know how 2Mbs of extra Cache translates to real world performance.

Last thing heard the 3570K runs cooler, at least that was one review... The price difference is pretty much negligible also but I like to save money where I can since this is a full build (case, psu, the whole 9)

Typically chips without HT will run cooler because HT does generate some extra heat.

I think you will be fine with a 3570K for your uses. I don't think a 3770K is necessary at all unless you want to do more intense stuff like video rendering/image editing or perhaps run some intense programs in the background while gaming. I would just go with the 3570K. thumb.gif

I assume then you have to render objects for the game (Sorry not very knowledgeable with programming that much)
But it does sound like you would benefit from it.

Can't say much about the 2MB, but I doubt it makes a huge difference.

And the 3570K does run cooler at stock, but a lot of reviews says it runs hotter at higher frequencies. But that's not bad considering a 4.6GHz Ivy is on par with a 4.8~5.0GHz SB.

personally i would go with the 3770k if im doing other things besides gaming. HT is really helpful in rendering.
but if your budget is tight the 3570k should be more then enough.

i was leaning towards the 3770k because i think it'll pay for itself in the long run.

yeah for XNA game programming we are rendering hundreds of cubes at a time and lighting effects. Right now my buddy is using a 990X but I really don't think I need a 6core (2011 socket) because it runs on my Lynnfield currently. LOL it definetly wouldn't hurt anything to have more threads... wouldn't be detrimental if i didn't though i guess.

Not looking to break any records this time around. It's a budget Z77/Ivy build. Stock speeds would be more than enough for my needs lol but this isn't goodEnoughClock.Net and I will OC it eventually. Hmmm yeah potentially I could benifit from more threads with game programming. good point thumb.gif

Your probably correct in saying that a 3770K isn't necessary. I know that you may not be able to say what kind of tangible benefits I would see either. Do you think I would benefit from the 3770K if I was running Fraps/skype/itunes or something in the background while gaming? headphone.gif

Was leaning towards it too. Lots of reading over the past 2 weeks and looking at reviews. heh wouldn't be as nice to have if it was easy to choose I guess. rolleyes.gif

Yeah, you should see an increase in performance. I can't say how much, it should be there.
But for using FRAPS, you get more of an improvement if you record to a secondary HDD.
Say you have your C:/, you would then record to your D:/, granted its a separate HDD, not a partitioned one.
