7680x1440 - what card(s)

Thread Starter
Hey all,

Have just ordered some extra u2711's and now I'm on the hunt for gpu's to get me surround gaming!

Mentioned this in the nvidia surround thread but I'm looking for as much feedback as possible.

I've more or less narrowed it down to 3 options...

SLI GTX580's (3gb model?)
SLI GTX680's (worth waiting for 4gb?)
Crossfire 7970's

Really not keen on the 7970 option, I've had so many bad AMD/ati experiences (4) so its really a last resort. 680 availability is just about non existant in aus at the mo... Can't even find anyone taking preorders for 4gb cards (is the 4gb worth waiting for?). I can pick up a couple GTX580's pretty easily and a couple hundred $'s cheaper overall, but I'm worried I might regret not waiting for the 680's to be more available.

Thoughts? Comments? Suggestions?

Cheers

680 4gb x3/x4. that's what i would use
At that resolution you WILL need the power of 3x 680s for jigh settings, and you will need 4GB of RAM. I would suggest waiting for the 4GB models. thumb.gif

You could always pick up some used 3GB 580's for a temp solution until the 4GB 680's come out. Then sell off the 580's and upgrade.

2x 580's just isn't enough for highest settings in new games unless you remove all AA if 60fps is your aim.

At 6010x1080 my 2x 580 3gb's ran all games on highest settings with no AA constantly at 60fps no problem. if I added 4xAA in BF3 for instance I would sit around 35-55fps.

That's pushing 6490800 pixels, 7680x1440 is just less than double that amount of pixels (11059200), so I would deffinetly say you would need that 3rd 580 GPU too play comfortably at 60fps maybe even a 4th if you want AA. Of course you could just drop some settings if your comfortable with that.

As for VRAM, 3GB is still plenty. The most I've seen is 2.8gb of usage on skyrim with hundreds of mods, insane 4000px textures, early unoptimised ENB graphic mods, UGrids set at 11 (which is just far too much), full quality SSAO and 8xAA & 4xSSAA! frames were more the issue at these settings as I couldn't break 35fps tongue.gif

BF3 @6010x1080 with max settings and 4xAA I see 2.2GB usage max so I highly recommend 580 3gb's biggrin.gif

Wow pccasegear's site has had a lot more added to it since earlier today!

$799 for a single card is gonna hurt :\ plus I think that card is either 2.5 or 3 slot which isn't going to work for me frown.gif

Keep em coming guys. I'm happy to turn down some things. Hell I don't crank absolutely everything with my current setup.

So 2gb 680 not an option? Seems like I could get away with 1 and then add more over time but maybe not.

More opinions! smile.gif thanks smile.gif

This, get 3 of these. Not just for better frames but microstutter reduces A LOT from 2x SLI to 3x SLI

Yeah they add things throughout the day, normally later though.

Get 3 7970s if you need it now. I would recommend a custom cooler as a must, especially in crossfirex due to reference being noisy especially when overclocked.

If you can wait, wait for the 7990s and pick up two presuming you have a pcie 3.0 slot or get 4gb gtx 680s depending on which games you play. I'd recommend the 680s in this case though if your case/cooling/mobo can handle 3/4 of them.

Have fun!
