First Build

Thread Starter
Hi,

The kids want a Dell Alienware X51, the wife wants anything thats quiet and I want a Mac. So we have decided that I will build a quiet PC that runs games like WOW, Minecraft, Skyrim etc, that way everybody gets what they want (apart from me).

Decided to build one rather than buy one because I thought it would save a few quid and be educational for the kids. Everybody says it's easy and fun and I thought I can't be that hard all you need is a few bits and then you screw it all together, plug in a few wires and the jobs done.

How wrong I was...atx, matx or itx ? amd or intel, sandybridge or ivybridge, i3, i5 or i7 ? overclock ? what size case ? fans, pwm, 3 pin, 4 pin, fast or slow, what size, volts, air or water ?, coolers, stock, fanless, push pull ? graphics cards, nvidea, amd, sli, crossfirex ? mobo asus, gigabyte or msi ? noise, 20 decibels, 0.5 sones ???, PSU, fanless ? bronze or Gold or Platininum, how may watts ? it is never ending...

Anyway I am nearly there, I have joined oerclock because there is a Temjin TJ08E forum with lots of info and that is the case I have decided to use. Hopefully I will be able to steal (oops borrow) lots of great ideas and as soon as the ivybridge processors are released get this thing built.

Yup it is a little time consuming if you are new. You have to make sure everything is compatible with everything, if that makes sense. Then you have to take your time building it (you don't want to ruin those precious parts before you power it on)
Anyways welcome!

Thanks for the Welcome guys.

Re my budget - I will have to talk to the missus and see how much she will let me have - ho ho ho. I am looking to spend £800 as soon as the ivy bridge chips are released and another £200 on the GPU (see I am learning, it's not graphics card, it's GPU) next month.

A nice chap in the "Silverstone TJ08-E Owners Club" thread has already helped with my chice of case / cooler / PSU, so I will post my proposed list of bits there.

Thanks again
Dave
