ECC Overhead

Hey guys,

I'm currently entering the field of building and maintaining servers, and I just wanted to understand why ECC memory is not being offered in enthusiast based chipsets and die architecture. Is there that much overhead involved? No demand? Intel/AMD securing the cost of server chips with ECC only being offered on those lines? Any supplemental information would greatly be appreciated.

Well, ECC memory is more expensive because it has to have an extra chip to store parity. Motherboards which support ECC ram are also more expensive.

Also, memory corruption is something that seldom happens (we're talking cosmic background radiation etc. flipping bits). Yes, with more and more systems using 16+gb of ram, you would have more chance of an error being created, but on most if not all consumer applications, there is no need.

Hmm, so it is just a cost barrier, or is there a performance slow down as well. Am I understanding parity in the same context as if to be compared to RAID? From the slides I was reviewing from intel, 67% of hardware failure were associated with memory problems, and 32% of those failures resulted in the forclosure of said company recieving a catastrophic system failure.

There is a tiny speed hit of around 1-3% dpending upon the application.

As I said, 32gb+ servers running 24/7 with memory intensive applications (eg. when databases are cached and reads are all performed in RAM) have a much higher chance to generate an memory error.

Not just this, but when a memory error is generated, it can be catastrophic in server applications.
