Q9550 Overclocking Help

post #1 of 90
Thread Starter
Hello guys, i recently updated my Q8200 to a Q9550 and my 667MHz RAM to 1066MHz just to be able to overclock like the rest of you do. I really thought that the money to buy it would worth the amount of overclocking it would receive but its so difficult to do it. Yes its my first overclock and i found out that overclocking needs so much effort due to the million times of rebooting and failed reboots, waiting and crashes. To get to the point, you can see my system on my signature so im gonna ask you how can i improve my overclock. The only stable frequency i got to achieve is a 3.5GHz on the CPU which is watercooled by a quad radiator btw, so temps are not a problem. Here are my overclock settings:

FSB: 412MHz x 8.5(multi) = 3.5GHz
PCIX = 101MHz

Vcore = 1.35V
MCH Overvoltage Control increased by 0.35V (My mobo doesnt have the setting to choose a specific voltage, the only thing you can do is choose how much to increase it)
DDR2 Overvoltage Control increased by 0.4V (My RAM needs 2.2V and my mobos default is 1.8V)
FSB Overvoltage Control increased by 0.2V
Loadline Calibration Off

This is the only stable thing i got to achieve until now. There is only one problem though, that in CPU-Z the CPU frequency sometimes is shown to be 2.4GHz and the multiplier to be x6.0. Does this mean that my cpu is underclocking itself to prevent a crash?

Waiting for replies from overclocking experts.
Thanks in advance,
Geo

To prevent your CPU from downclocking, turn off all power saving features like C1E and EIST.

You could try and up the vcore a tad and see if that helps.

Actually i reduced the vcore to 1.25V and its as stable as before so this meant it was too high..when i try to increase the fsb and vcore the pc boots but restarts at post screen, or crashes at windows loading screen or after 1-2 minutes of using windows....

looks like its worse than i though..i tried prime95 at 3.5GHz and after 3 minutes the pc freezes so i had to reset it...At 3.4 same thing happened...anybody knows why it freezes? I have it at 3.2GHz now with 1.25V Vcore, +0.0V MCH, +0.4 DDR2, +0.0V FSB....do u think this is a ram problem? I had the ram multiplier at 2.00B so it was like 840~ from 1066 when i was at 3.5 and now i switches the memory multiplier to auto...

It might be the temps, what were the temps when you were running p95 and never set the volts on auto, it feeds more volts than necessary.

My temps on idle are about 30-31°C and on 100% load with prime95 are 39-42°C...is it that high?

No temps are great. Hmm.. I have no idea how good the Gigabyte Bios is vs the Asus Rampage I ran, but you might want to check This Post For what I was running on my chip. Also look through that thread for good advice and overall ideas on how to tune the chip.

3.2 you should be able to do almost with stock voltage lol. (ok well a little more than stock, but nowhere near 1.3)

Those temps. are really good, your chip or the board is simply not capable of achieving those clocks I guess.

But it is surprising as most Q9550s clock really high. Could also be the RAM, have you tinkered with the timings?
