i7 950 to 3770K - Page 2

If we think about it regarding dead tech for 1155 moving foward. Even if we went with X79 2011 chip, in two or three years it too will have come to a dead end. So regardless 1155 or 2011 by the time we look again to upgrade either will have ended. Intel seems to move tech every other year on average.

I'm building a new main rig because I'm handing down my X58 i7 960 to the kids. I've been tossing the idea of this very same thing, only mine is a forced upgrades build. I've decided to go Ivy. I'm not an extreme over clocker so my moderate OC will still equal a SB 5.0 and that seems more than enough to me. Since the moderate IB OC is more of a sure thing than the extreme SB lucky OC.

As for X79 I've already pulled the plug on Z77 board when it released. If you can go another year for Haswell then hang tight. I don't think if you did go Ivy you'll be kicking yourself anyway.

I've been pondering this same thing myself, current owner of a 960. At this point, I think it would be more economical to upgrade video card and cooling than migrating to IB. I've contemplated jumping on the 2500k train, but I think waiting for haswell would probably make more sense, but than again, to each his own.

Well looks like I'm going to stick to my trusty i7 920 which I bought in 2008. X58 lives on. Now let's wait and see what Haswell has planned for us biggrin.gif

I'm gonna have to upgrade. I still can't get the computer to recognize all 6 gigs of memory on a cold boot. This is after replacing the cpu, motherboard, and memory. 3.99 usable out of 6gigs. I have to go in and reset my bios, then redo my overclock to get it to see all 6 gigs. I've had this problem for almost 2 years now. Seems common with x58. tongue.gif
In progress.

This. 32-bit doesn't allow for more than 4GB.

Moving from LGA 1366 to LGA 1155 is considered a downgrade by INTEL. Now in my opinion this is a more complex situation. I also have an I7 920 OCed to 3.8 GHz (i can push to 4GHz but is getting to hot) and my system consumes in idle 180W (2 drives, 1 SSD, 1 Bluray optical drive, HD6950, 12GB DDR3) while with stock clock around 140W. Now if you consider to upgrade to improve power efficiency i would say changing from I7 920/950 to I7 3770K to be an upgrade, especialy when the system is in full load. Even on idle and OCed to 4.5 GHz the consumption of I7 3770K system should be around 115-120W, which is prety nice. Now in terms of performance I7 9xx series performs faster than I7 2600K in a clock to clock comparison but in terms of performace/watt i think they are behind.
I agree that I7 9xx should be still OK for one more year or even more and it's not necessary to change till Haswell will be released but also the price would go down if you want to sell it. I think now you can still get a good price for a x58 system.

EDIT: After checking some reviews I7 2600k outperforms I7 9xx series in clock for clock benchmarks

I think you got it wrong; the 2600k is faster clock for clock than the 9xx series.

You are right i was reading some benchmarks where memory played importand role. Here is a link that confirms what you said that 2600k is better performer than 9xx.
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?264693-MSI-P67A-GD65-2600K-full-test-and-comparision-with-X58-I7

Anyway SB/IB is alot better in terms of performance/watt.
