I don't have anything inherently against Samsung phones and I definitely wouldn't say that I won't ever get one, but from using my dad's Galaxy S2 I can find three main issues:

  • TouchWiz is terrible (yes, I know this can be fixed with custom ROMs but it's nice to have a good stock interface should you have any issues with custom ROMs)
  • The build quality is rubbish. Considering it was their flagship mobile when he got it, and it's certainly not cheap, the build quality is far lower than what I would expect.
  • The radio seems poor. Wi-Fi and mobile data usually need to be switched on and off before you can actually get online with them, which is an issue I never had on my HD2 which was 2 1/2 years old.

Having said that, they do make some good phones and the Galaxy Nexus does look really nice. I'm also looking forward to seeing what the Galaxy S3 brings to the table, though I don't think there'll be any surprises (don't tell anyone, but I THINK it might have a quad core Exynos!)

Thread Starter
This isn't just a Verizon problem. There was a big thing with sprint about the radio issue and even spent acknowledged the issue and worked with Samsung to get it rectified. Sure I know how to root and do custom roms but this isn't a video game where you mod it to make it more like a game your wasn't to play, these issues shouldn't exist to begin with.

Anywho, going to search when I get home from work.

I got rid of my Galaxy Nexus for this exact reason. When I got it I upgraded from the Droid RAZR. At the time I was only in an extended 4G network zone but my RAZR almost always had 4G coverage but I didn't see the Galaxy Nexus say 4G at my house once, ever. Then I got tired of it and picked up the Rezound and had 4G again. Then they actually brought reliable 4G to my area but the Galaxy Nexus was just so annoying with it's reception issues. I had like -100+ signal strength at my house and with the Rezound I had between -75 and -85 which is pretty much consistant 4-5 bars. With the Galaxy Nexus it was more like 0-1 bars. Verizon replaced it because my speaker stopped working and the new phone had the problem too.

My friend has it now and he complains all the time because the service sucks but he's stuck with it.

The wifi radio on this gnex is worse than my Hd2. That's the main reason I prefer HTC devices

I'm on a low end Sammy (Exhibit 2) and am pretty happy with it. While it doesn't have the biggest and brightest screen or the sexiest looks it has been a wonderful performer.

The Nexus has an awful LTE radio, just about every review talks about how it gets much slower speeds/lower signals than other LTE phones.

That's not true at all, read this article.

To add to discussion, my Galaxy Nexus (Verizon) is by far the best smartphone I've ever owned. Went from (Blackberry Curve 2G) -> Droid 1 -> Droid X -> HTC Thunderbolt -> Samsung Stratosphere -> iPhone 4 -> Galaxy Nexus.

Havent even considered getting a new phone since I got the Nexus. And having sampled the pack, I leave my recommendation with the Samsung devices, hands down. Motorola and their locked bootloaders (minus the D1, loved my D1), HTC build quality was awful, particularly on the Thunderbolt there was a thin "clearcoat" on the kickstand that rubbed off the first day you used it, made the phone look really trashy regardless of how well you took care of it. And 3-4 warranty replacements later, could not escape the random reboot issues with my Thunderbolt. No direct complaints about the iPhone other than nitpicks, the screen was too small/hard to type on, and audio quality left something to be desired.

I'll likely keep my Nexus well after the 2 year contract is up.

Thank you...voice of sanity in this thread filled with so much misinformation. Can't believe how much crap the Galaxy Nexus has gotten for ACCURATELY reporting signal strength.

Samsung's hardware and build quality is very good. The Galaxy Nexus is a beautifully designed phone, but doesn't place form over function, such as making making the entire thing out of glass. Their software (Touchwiz) unfortunately is not. Hopefully they'll scale it back with the GS3...or maybe even go with Stock ICS, but that's a pipe dream.
I think most people tend the equate build quality with build materials. This means that devices that are made with plastic have a lot of negative connotations associated with them, but when a company starts to use more technical terms (Nokia N9/ polycarbonate ) those connotations disappear. Also people don't seem to see any of the advantages of plastic vs metal/glass are ie cracked glass, dented aluminium.

Cheers
