Accidentally hit 96* w/ q9550 :(

Hi all,

Tonight I noticed that the fan on my H50 had stopped working and when I turned on Real Temp core 1 was at 96* and the other 3 cores had just stopped reporting. I immediately shut off my PC, replaced the bad fan, and swore a lot. I've turned it back on and it's working fine and idling at 41* across all cores which is about normal. I think it probably ran for about an hour with only passive cooling from the H50. I know I shouldn't run a q9550 past 72* so I'm wondering how bad the damage might be since it was at least at 96*? Should I start saving for Ivy Bridge, or will it be alright?

Thanks.

If it wasn't that long then you might be just fine with no real ill effects. Only the future will tell you if it was damaged in any way.

Run some loops of IBT or prim95. That will tell you for sure if the processor is stable or not. It most likely is, though. I wouldn't worry too much.

Okay thanks for the reassurance. I thought I might have done a suicide run watching Thor.... That would be the lamest way to fry a chip ever.

One hour of high temps shouldn't harm it badly... like daydream99 said run some benchmarks and stress tests and if it's degraded just adjust accordingly

95c? Nothing happened, don't worry.

Lol, don't worry about it. For real.

I recently replaced the stock heatsink that probably wasn't making contact with my friend's Q6600. (One pushpin was broken and another was loose)

His temps were 97+ on all cores. And he had it that way for months. (The Q6600 actually downclocked to 1.6 ghz and he had to turn everything on low in every one of his games.)

And just to emphasize.. MONTHS lol

After I replaced it with an aftermarket cooler, we had no problem oc'ing like any other regular old G0 Q6600.
