New to Linux, need to know a bit more. - Page 2

Here's basically what I did to get where I am today (it's nothing worth bragging about, but I'm FAR more comfortable with Linux now than I was a few months ago):

1 - Installed Ubuntu on a VM and got my feet wet with the shell
2 - Learnt the common utilities like tar, man, less , grep, and so on.
3 - Explored the package manager, and try to get a working setup with everything needed for desktop use.
4 - Hopped between the major RPM and DEB based distros
5 - Tried out arch and got a working desktop from a minimal base
6 - WIN!

But with all that said, the only way to learn is to READ. Read the man pages, info pages, wiki pages, and anything else you find. GNU/Linux is a completely different approach to computing, and you WILL trip from time to time, but after a while, you begin to see the "light", so to speak wink.gif
