Is this app real?

Thread Starter
Okay so I want an App, where is a take a picture of a maths sum, it will process it and calculate the answer. Does this exist yet?

e.g. someone gives you a bunch of expenses, you list the costs and take a picture and app calculates the total.

I'm not trying to cheat at maths or anything (I'm 20), part of my work entails some quick calculations and it would save me a bunch of time (and hopefully be more accurate).

If this app has not been made yet . I'm trademarking and copy writing the idea and any other legal stuff I need! I'm watching you Google!

The math logic has been around for ages, but no-one (to my knowledge) has integrated it with photo recognition.

Why not give it a go yourself? You can learn a skill and maybe even make some money from it :-)

Honestly the problem is if it were large enough a list it would be sent in a spreadsheet or similar format. However, with smaller summations a catch all algorithm/applicaton would need to be validated especially if it were reading data in different formats/sizes/fonts, and ultimately you would have to do it all by hand anyway.

I'd love to try developing this, but I currently do not have the skillset, nor the time to do so. however is someone else does, i'll allow release if i get royalties. aha spending to much time trying to learn Asterisk for work

TickleMeElmo has an important point.

Also keep in mind, a lot of this would involve the picture/image handling/processing from the device, and no doubt the functionality you'd need for manipulating/processing the image is already covered by one or multiple image-handling patents--which would mean a potentially lengthy and perhaps expensive licensing process.

Looks like the general idea of recognizing a written mathematical equation and then digitizing/evaluating has been researched: http://www.ijcte.org/papers/79-G203-485.pdf

This could be off-loaded to a server. thumb.gif

The image could be uploaded, processed, and calculated on a server.... assuming Internet connection.

Oh, I think I was not clear enough--I didn't mean in terms of the processing power needed for analyzing the image--I meant in the context of how the image processing is handled, and that the method would probably infringe on current IP/patents for image processing. smile.gif
