Random Shutdowns - Help?

Thread Starter
My computer will randomly just shut off. It wont reboot unless I turn off the PSU switch for 5 seconds. It doesnt lock up or anything, its as if the power goes out, but only on the tower. At first it only shut down when playing Counterstrike: Source, so I thought it was a problem with the game, but now it will shut down sometimes doing simple tasks like surfing the web

I ran 3dbench05 and hotcpu tester with speedfan to see if it was a heat problem. Nothing went above 50C and nothing shut down either. I used panda active scan to check for viruses and it found some spyware which I think I got rid of most of it, but no viruses.

Im at a loss... My guess is the PSU is going down the drain so I bought a new one and it should be comming in soon. I figured I would see if you guys have any suggestions.

edit: I would like to add that I've had this setup for over a year and everything has been great. FYI I have a 6600GT gpu in case it matters

Yeah, that definitely *sounds* like a PSU problem, but try this. Reset your CMOS. I was having similar errors till I did that. I know, its weird that your CMOS would have something to do with that, but it does.

What kind of PSU do you have coming?

Yeah I thought of that, but didnt think it would do anything. Ill give it a try. I got the Hiper ATX12V 580W. I was looking for one with half way decent reviews and these ones had better reviews than most of the popular brands like thermaltake and antec

Yeah, Thermaltake and Antec are okay, but, some better brands are:

FSP
Seasonic
OCZ
Tagan
PC Power & Cooling (PC P&C)
Enermax
Silverstone

The one you're getting is just fine for your system.

CMOS reset didnt work...

You think the Hiper will be good if I make any slight upgrades? I never go all out when I do any PC upgrades but It would be nice if I dont have to buy yet another PSU.

Yeah dude, you could upgrade to whatever you wanted for that mobo. CPU, RAM, video card, cooling, whatever. That PSU should hold you over for a good while.

Well a PSU is one of those things that is upgraded pretty often, and at least you really needed it. Rosewill is not the best lol. But if the PSU doesn't solve the problem, just post back.

Did you try by passing the case on/off switch to eliminate it?
What are the voltages showing in the BIOS?
Probably the PS but it's good to test the switch.
Unplug it from the MB and tap the 2 pins with the tip of a screwdriver to start. Also, sometimes the plastic button that actuates the switch can stick and cause that effect. The switch and button issue is rare but quick and easy to eliminate as the cause.

Vcore : 1.49
+3.3V: 3.30
+5V: 5.11
+12V: 12.10
-12V: 11.71
-5V: 3.50
+5VSB: 5.64

They stay fairly consistant under load.

Ill do the switch test later to see if thats it.
