They're mechanical keyboards. Or at least a hybrid of some sort.

EDIT: Hmm I swear these were fully mechanical when I first heard about them. Guess they just made it more tactile it seems like. Just watched the video Kim Rom did last year and it seems like they didn't go with a fully mech anymore.

I know I'm resurrecting an old post here. But I just noticed that Cherry does make a low-profile mechanical switch that would be suitable for a gaming laptop:
http://www.cherrycorp.com/english/switches/pdf/ml_cat.pdf

They're obviously still too large and expensive for mainstream laptops. But for a gamer that is willing to pay extra, and doesn't care about having the thinnest possible laptop, these do exist.
Having said this, I do NOT know of any laptop that uses them.

Likewise- I just thought to re-live this thread after watching this:

There still isn't a mech laptop keyboard out there. Would be interesting!

Getac makes their units with the new low profile Cherry 3.0 MX Red switches that are backlit in Red, it's a +$200.00 upgrade though. These units were designed to compete with Panasonic Toughbooks, I resell them into small and local governments, great units. http://us.getac.com/notebooks/index.html

So, there is someone making them biggrin.gif
