I have seen people excited over the new 680 4GB what is suppose to come out soon. Being new in the GPU section, I was just wondering what kind of benefits does having more RAM on a GPU offer? more fps? faster loading? smoother picture? smile.gif

Large amounts of VRAM really helps you when you get into the really high resolutions like with Eyefinity or Nvidia Surround setups. Usually when running 3+ monitors you want to shoot for the most VRAM you can get.

Yup. This sums it up pretty well.

The safe way of going is this....

1920 x 1080 and under you don't need much more than 1380MB of VRam, no more than 2GB.

Resolutions higher than 1920 x 1080 you want 2GB or higher. This can be a combination of two displays lower than 1920 x 1080 apiece, but combined have a higher pixel count than what you have to drive with a single 1920 x 1080 display. Then of course you have your massive surround displays that you want as much as you can get.

Also remember anti aliasing renders a high resolution image and downscales it to remove jaggies, meaning high levels of AA use more vram, too.

Extremely high texture resolutions also use more vram.

Extremely high texture resolutions also use more vram.

While increasing visual settings will use more Vram, you can still only push so much to the display at a given resolution. From everything I have seen at 1920 x 1080 even maxed out load doesn't go above 2GB. Although I would concede this could easily change as new games come out with some of the new games engines that are being shown off.

it can also be useful if you use high resolution texture addons to games. 4 gig is practically over the top even for that, but id say its definitely nice having it for possible future use.
