Anyone have an HTC Rezound running a custom ROM?

Thread Starter

I ask because I just got mine and am looking to flash an ICS ROM. Only issue is, I'm thoroughly confused as to how exactly to do it. I'm looking through the "guides" on XDA and I definitely don't remember the rooting process for my old Droid X being anywhere near this complicated. With that phone, I used a one-click root utility in Windows. With the Rezound, there doesn't appear to be anything of the sort available and I also don't really understand these HTC-specific terms like S-off/S-on, fastboot images, what the difference is, etc. If someone out there who has done this can give me a few pointers so I don't brick this phone, I'd appreciate it a lot biggrin.gif

Just rooting and flashing custom ROM+kernel is a whole different thing.

My advice : just follow follow this noobproof guide :

This.

HTC S-OFF/S-On

With S-OFF you're able to write to the NAND memory on the phone, this is not possible with S-ON. Without getting S-OFF you won't be able to root your phone, etc.

HTC basically made it a little more difficult for Android users to mess with their phones, unless they're basically notified via the HTCDev website.

Ya, but it's been quite different with HTC and Motorola and how they've been locking their bootloaders.

I unlocked the bootloader using HTC's site and it appeared to work, however the bootloader screen still says S-ON and when I tried to run the "OneClickRoot" tool located here, it didn't work. The cmd output said something like "could not chmod superuser.apk to (directory name), read only filesystem," which I take it has something to do with S-ON still being there? I have everything else installed that I need (Android SDK, etc.)

I have a Rezound and I have it rooted on a custom ICS Rom. It takes more than a 1 click method to obtain root on this device.

From your last post I gather that you have successfully unlocked via HTC dev and want to install a custom ROM. Here is what you need to do:

First, make sure in the bootloader your device is unlocked, if it isn't then you need to re-do the HTC process, if it says ***Unlocked*** then you can start the process of getting root.

Staying with the stock ROM/Installing Recovery

You are going to want to download Amon Ra recovery from this link. Make sure you download the PH98IMG.zip from the attachments. Put this file on the root of your SD card and reboot to the bootloader. It will now prompt you to install a recovery. Follow the prompts and reboot the device when it says the process is finished.

Now, boot the phone up and delete the PH98IMG.zip from your SD card, if you don't do this you will be prompted to install recovery again when rebooting to the bootloader again. After deleting the file, reboot to the bootloader and use the volume button to scroll down to the recovery option then press the power button.

Now you are in recovery. Go to Developer menu and choose the install su and superuser option. Follow the prompts and congrats, you will now have root on your stock rom.

Flashing a custom ROM

The Rezound has a leaked Ice Cream Sandwich RUU that everyone is basing their ROMS off of. If you want to install a custom ROM you will need to flash this leak.

First back up your rom in recovery then reboot and backup anything else you want to keep that is on your phones internal storage (apps, pictures, etc)

Alright, now your going to download this link

Put this file on your SD card and reboot to the bootloader

It will take a while to load, but it will eventually ask if you want to update a bunch of stuff, select yes and let it do its thing

Once its done, unlock via HTC dev again then use the directions above to install recovery again and get root.

Now you can install any rom out there.

Getting S-OFF

If you have had an HTC device in the past you know S-OFF removes all limitations of flashing roms and other things such as boot images and splash screens. I would recommend doing it.

To get S-OFF head over to XDA via this link

S-OFF notes
Make sure you download the file for ICS, not gingerbread. If you download the gingerbread one and you are on ICS you will have to RUU again and reinstall recovery to be able to use your SD card for storage.

The wire trick is no big deal, people are freaking out over it, but its super easy, do what the instructions say and you will be fine.

I hope this helps thumb.gif

Thanks so much for taking the time to type out all this information biggrin.gif

Pretty sure I screwed something up though...I followed these steps to "Flashing a Custom ROM", but now the bootloader is saying "Main Version is older! Update fail!" and then gets stuck at the HTC logo. Not sure how to fix this.......

You loose your warranty if you unlock using official method.
