Sound card for Logitech X-540s

I'm in the marketplace for a sound card to increase the quality of Logitech-X-540s. I know these are budget entry level pc speakers but I'd like to see what is the best sound I can get out of them before stepping up to the Z-906's. My budget is 100 max, which I am hoping isn't unrealistic for these speakers. I''ve seen so many bad reviews on CREATIVE labs that I'd almost like to stay away from them. I've heard nothing but good things about ASUS however and so far I'm looking at the Asus-Xonar-5-1.

Looking for the best deal for Music and Gaming. I'll also be using a Logitech G35 gaming headset from time to time.

Do you really need 5.1 surround? You'd be better off with 2.1 for music.
Creative makes good products, it'd be foolish to completely ignore their lineup.

You should be looking at the Asus Xonar DX or the Creative Titanium in your price range.

why would 2.1be better for music? I would think more is better for audio lol
Music is usually made in a 2.1 format. By default the music will only play on the left/right front speakers and the sub. You can use fill functions (it has plenty of names depending on the software) to make it output on all speakers, but I doubt you've done that for your current speakers.
In exchange for ditching the rear and front middle speakers, you'll be able to purchase better speakers. It's logical, if you remove 3 speakers, you can make the rest of the speakers better and keep the same total price.

I don't know what's cool at the moment. As you can see in my sig, I went the cheap way and got Z906's. They're nice, but fact is that I only use them for music (headphones are better for FPS games) and my 2 rear speakers aren't even hooked up at the moment.

I had the x-540 and they were pretty good for the $50 I bought them for. I upgraded to a Klipsch Promedia 2.1 system last year and there was a big difference in sound quality. You can find the promedias on ebay new for around $100. I got mine instore at Best Buy for $120(on sale). Paired with my xonar dx, I'm pretty satisfied for now. I'll probably upgrade to bookshelf speakers + amp + powered sub later on.

I like mine but the only thing I can compare them to is maybe from back about 5 years ago when I didn't have them. I had some 3 dollar speaker and on board sound man was it terrible. The logitechs were like 80$ when I bought them and I love them. Not sure why they are 100+ now though.

Logitech is for people that don't care for audio fidelity and want a simple all in one open a box and slap them on your table fix.

The quality isn't so bad that you're disgusted with it, but it's not amazing either. You're left feeling completely neutral with them.

Downside is the price. I bought X540s for 45 bucks on CL. Lasted me for a while as I learned about audio. Then I sold them off (sold them for 60 or something xD). Moved onto better things.
