Yep in my experience, killing windows explorer doesn't give you zilch, it does nothing. Difference between blue and green theme is small, but it is there. I've heard the minimise myth go around a few times too and that does nothing but keep you in suspense as to whether or not the bench is still running.
This is far from maxing out efficiency on Z77, but I'll show it anyway to give you an idea of what can be achieved by following the guide. 90% of the tweaking is done with ram subtimings, the OS, themes, waza etc all come a distant second to the performance increase they will give.

An untweaked run at 4ghz on Ivy can land on the wrong side of 8m, so these tweaks aren't just giving a small bump to help you up the rankings, it's making a huge difference.
Another vote for a low clock 32m challenge.
